| 1435364 | 2017-05-16 01:03:00 | Hey all, Long story short, I replaced the HDD on a 2011 iMac (21.5" model). Decent little unit, and it's much better now there's a SSD in there. I installed Windows 10 on it initially, but, can't get the drivers to play nice for the GPU (nVidia 9400M) and the basic windows driver means Windows hammers the CPU all the time there's anything doing GPU calls .... So I wanna try and pop Linux on there. Don't really care what, Ubuntu, Mint, whatever! My issue is that I can't get the damn thing to boot from USB, because I don't have Bootcamp installed, nor do I have the original Mac keyboard. Holding Alt will give me the "Choose your boot device", but the USB drive doesn't come up for me because it wants to "EFI Boot", and it's not happy with me putting Mint or Ubuntu onto the USB drive, presumably because they're not UEFI-compatible or whatever :( I can't clear the partition table from within Windows, diskpart warns me I can't do it from the currently active OS. I can't use WUBI, it drops its nuts when trying to reboot into it Open to any suggestions on how I can get outta this pickle :D Cheers Chill. |

| 1435366 | 2017-05-16 02:02:00 | Linux can boot EFI on current versions so that shouldn't be it. A lot of people use virtual machines to mount the Linux ISO but I don't quite see how that works for replacing the OS exactly. Some instructions here starting from OS X, maybe you can adapt the method www.macworld.co.uk |

| 1435367 | 2017-05-16 02:49:00 | Ugh, so, burning that same Ubuntu ISO to a DVD works and boots happily. Had to go up the road and buy a DVD, first time I've burned one in YEARS now! Such a fail, works from DVD but not USB... But I'm in! :D Thanks guys |

| 1435368 | 2017-05-16 02:55:00 | too late then but I meant to say, Rufus has 2 different options for creating a bootable image from an ISO, maybe the one it doesn't default to might have been worth a try, if you are even using Rufus. As an unsolicited side note, Rufus will quite happily make a bootable USB installer from a windows Vista ISO :) Saved me dragging out my DVD's last time. I just keep a couple of RW ones handy. |

But I'm in! :D Thanks guys had a Win10 laptop here with the same issue, boots from DVD , not from USB stick (USB was bootable on other PC's) just love machines where they dont test the most basic things before selling em :badpc: |

I recently found that Chrome and FF often disable a lot of hardware acceleration in Linux so that browser scrolling is not smooth and Video playback uses a lot of CPU. For me this is with older intel graphics but it was easy to find guides for forcing hardware acceleration on and it made a fairly nice difference. Mint XFCE on a 3Ghz C2D, 4GB of RAM, and intel Q45 integrated graphics is really very responsive and light on resources. |

| 1435373 | 2017-05-16 05:22:00 | So far it's going brilliantly! Browser scrolling is no issues. Drivers installed no worries, tried the nouveau one, rebooted, fine. Then thought I'd live dangerously and the official nVidia one, zero issues :D glxgears is now giving me ~2700fps? I have nothing to compare vs, but, cool :D Seems this is also a 3Ghz C2D, 8G RAM, nVidia 9400M. So nice to have a full bash environment again, haven't yet done the Creators Edition update whatever for Win10 on my main work laptop and have just been using cygwin for the last several years for the most part. Fun times! How'd you end up forcing the hardware acceleration? Was that just inside your browser, or, something overall? |
