1434690 2017-04-28 10:04:00 Sometime in the next month I need to purchase 2 laptops, budget is a bit tight but wish list as follows

17" screens
RAM 4-8Gb
i5 minimum would love i7
Good battery life
USB3 at least 1 port
HDMI out
Win10 (Pro would be great) so could defer updates as needed.
Office.

One is for me and one for SWMBO. I do a bit of CAD work from time to time nothing major or power hungry.
Screen size is the big one for older eyes.

What recommendations are out there?

1434691 2017-04-28 10:52:00 budget is a bit tight Just been through this with a customer. They set a maximum of $800 -- Well once I stopped laughing to myself ;)

17" = Bigger price tags. Even looking at price spy, for anything even half good you are starting at $1300+ Each, most are closer to $2000 + each.

1434692 2017-04-28 21:12:00 Yes where we will be living for a while we won't be able to set up our desktops or even separate screens.

What I meant was budget won't stretch to $2k each so closer to the first figure.

1434693 2017-04-29 03:31:00 Even looking at Price Spy, if $1000 is the amount you are really limited to either HP Envy 17-K212tx

Or looking at Doves site ( one of my suppliers) the Acer E5-774G 17.3" i5-6200U 8GB 1TB is slighty over $1000.

1434695 2017-04-29 21:33:00 Acer - shudder pctek (84)
1434696 2017-04-29 22:42:00 If you're planning on Win 10%, an Acer is eminently throwable enough ;) R2x1 (4628)
1434697 2017-04-29 23:47:00 When price is a governing factor in a 17" there's not a lot of choices. wainuitech (129)
1434698 2017-04-30 00:59:00 Is 1.7" difference really needed from a 15.6" screen? You should think that over.

Bigger screens usually means smaller and finer, not easier to see without zooming which also is achieved on smaller screens.

The screen is your deal breaker. Do you need portability? Even all in ones can be cheaper but provide even larger screen real estate.

1434699 2017-05-06 08:28:00 Ok so revised the wish list a little looking at these two as a comparison.

AMD A8 (www.pbtech.co.nz)

Intel-i7 (www.pbtech.co.nz)

We need one laptop each and my thinking is these would do nicely since I'm going to wipe them and install Windows from scratch anyway.

What do you all think. I don't really know how the A8 compares and since only one will be used for CAD work either should do.
