2017-04-27 21:59:00 | How easy (or difficult) to replace a broken starter pull cord? This is what I have: 8016

2017-04-27 23:24:00 | It will be easy. If you remove the top cover, the red one, you will be able to get at the underneath of the round black bit. You should now be able to see how the cord is wound around a pully and replace it. | CliveM (6007) | |
2017-04-27 23:40:00 | Main problem is to get the same diameter cord, don't let the retailer fob you off with saying your cord has stretched that is why it is thinner, get the right size or the length of the cord will be too short to pull all the way out to arms length. Once you have got the correct diameter then measure the new against the old two broken pieces to get the approx correct length cord probably closest to the nearest meter. The cord spool is engineered to fill right up with the correct diameter cord being used. Heat the cord up with a match or lighter at the cut ends to seal off the ends and stop fraying, remember to knot the ends after putting through the appropriate holes on pull handle and spool. Don't loose the cams that provide the 'free-wheel' of the pulley on retraction of the cord and observe carefully how they are assembled ie orientation, whilst dissembling. Got to get the spring tension right by trial and error to fully rewind/retract the cord on the 'free-wheel', can be a slight hassle.

2017-04-28 02:20:00 | Depends on mower and how the cord is arranged, Your local mower repair guy should be pretty cheap, husband took one in once, after messing about with the many times repaired one, expected it to be expensive but no, new cord and he put it in on the spot, $20.

2017-04-28 04:00:00 | Cords are relatively easy to replace. It's the spring that can be tedious to replace - for the first time. Don't mess with them. I once spent a while rewinding a spring several times, after snipping off a weakened section, and trying to hook it on the pulley. Would pull and only partly retract. I discovered I wound the spring on in reverse (clockwise wound I think, rather than anti) - thus the engine would never start. so reversed it - then worked. Though I did learn from this excellent Vid (www.youtube.com) (YouTube Daves Farm) for Briggs Stratton springs/cords. I bought all my weed eaters, hedge trimmer, mowers cheap on Trademe because of similar cord retraction issues (and blocked carbs). Discovered though the pulley teeth can become worn, thus causing the cord to slip and not retract. Can buy cheap on eBay cord, spring, pulley and housing units. Also young blokes - like my nephews - wrench the hell out of the cords sometimes when pulling it.

Has the cord broken frayed? etc if its just the cord pull it right out jam a screwdriver through the pulley and cover and replace the cord. You can buy the cord at Placemakers per metre. However the its usually a case of cause and effect the recoil spring loses its springiness, retensioning it may not work if the spring becomes spring bound. The springs are easy to change as they come clamped and you push the clamp out as the spring sets in place. You then may have to bend the end so that it catches on the post. To retension wind the pulley usually anti clockwise with the rope in the little notch in the pulley you have the right tension when the starter grip sits rigid in the cover ie no flopped over or hanging out. |
