1434624 2017-04-27 04:27:00 Hi peoples,

We have a slight problem with a laptop.
My daughter is studying and needs to be able to write / type up large worded essays. in the past she has used Office? and it is not compatable with her lecturers pc. so they cannot open her essays.
so we thought we would get a new version of Word.
this has become a nightmare because it is so expensive!!

a one year subscription is $160, to buy the complete cd package deal is $260.

I do not think we have a word disc at home, but if it is off one of my previous PC's can I install it?

If no disc what are her best options, bearing in mind that she is a poor student.
Office and Libre have been used in the past, but the stress of trying to get the essays to be saved on either pen drive or to print it. because for some reason saving as a .doc and giving to lecturer doesnt work.

and these essays are 6000 words so not something you really want to be losing.

so the question is how do we get a full word package, (3-4 years more study to go) ?

sorry for the muddled explanation,

beetle

1434625 2017-04-27 05:28:00 Hi Beetle.
I have a similar problem with cousins in the UK.This computer has MS 265Office (?) & Word has .docx. Whilst cousins are still the old .doc. So they cannot open my letters. Is this the problem you have. PJ

Er what?
WTF is the lecturer using?

The only scenario I can think of is your files are .docx and school is .doc.
So then have her choose SAVE AS and save as .doc.

Or better yet, save as .RTF.

.rtf retains formatting but can be opened with almost anything at all.

1434628 2017-04-27 06:10:00 The prices you quoted are wrong.

The $160 / Year is Office 365 Home Premium and has a 5 user Licence.
Theres Office 365 Home Personal $119 / year 1 User Licence. ( some places sell it for under $100 originally, then the subscriptions are handled by MS)

The home 365 (both versions) contains Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher, Access. ( basically Professional)

The stand alone one time purchase, if you only need word then there's Microsoft Office Home & Student 2016 , which contains Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.

You DONT buy it with media, you can download it from Microsoft, it costs approx. $180-$190. (Office Home & Student 2016 )

Who ever quoted $260 is a damn rip off.

If you want Outlook as well then the Home & Business needs to be purchased as minimum, approx. $300. This is where the Office 365 Home Personal can be better, as its not a bigger outlay all at once, and is able to upgrade to any newer versions when MS put them out.

My daughter is studying Where is she studying and at what level ? Most of the university's or some other places can get it dirt cheap.

I agree . Lecturer should have a compatible/later version . Possibly need/download comparability pack, if version is before 2007 . Explained here ( . office . com/en-us/article/Save-a-document-in-Word-b7f55d8c-d714-4892-8fde-853a82419027" target="_blank">support . office . com) by MS .

1434632 2017-04-27 21:11:00 But it seems I regularly have had this problem, we do not seem to have word. so we need word.

I will go hunt in the shed for an old disk i guess, but my best option would be to buy online ??? and download it? for a year, single pc?

thank you

1434633 2017-04-27 21:33:00 You cant buy word on its own. It's included in the packages of office, what ever version you purchase. wainuitech (129)
