1435626 2017-05-23 00:11:00 Well the bad news is that it has made no difference. I still get the text menu. I tried both commands - "standard" and "legacy" (with reboots in between) and nothing changed.

One thing I hadn't mentioned because I didn't want to complicate things but it now looks like it might be relevant is that the text menu I am seeing is not the same as it used to be. It is difficult to see from the screenshot but the font is very thin and almost compressed. The "usual" text menu is a much bolder font.

Any ideas? I wonder whether I need to shut down rather than restart - I'll try that.

1435627 2017-05-23 00:33:00 Interesting. I shut down and restarted and it went straight to Win 10 with no menu. I opened up EasyBCD which still showed the menu items. I then noticed the "Use Metro bootloader" check box. Checked that and voila! I now have a modern-style menu. Still an oddity though. There is an extra entry - "Hard Drive".

8065

So the next question is: WTF is that, and how do I get rid of it?

1435628 2017-05-23 00:56:00 This is only a guess, so no idea what will happen if you remove it.

1. Go into Control Panel, or from search, Disk management - open it, and see whats there. Could be a ghost entry.
2. From Search, type in msconfig Open / boot tab, look to see whats listed as well. You can run options to check the boot loaders, again may be a ghost entry.

1435629 2017-05-23 01:58:00 OK, I seem to be sorted, but it was rather by luck than by skill.

EasyBCD was telling me I was using winload.efi.

As part of all this I noticed that Vista wouldn't boot (I think it is time for that to go - I lasted booted it in 2015!). It couldn't find winload.efi (no surprise there.) So I inserted a Vista DVD and did a repair. As a result of that I got my original text menu back and when I booted to Win10 EasyBCD said I was now using Winload.exe. I checked "Use Metro bootloader" and now I get a clean Metro-style menu with no superfluous entries. If I uncheck it I get the text menu. So, all good.

The only question remaining (and it is only for interest - not important) is what was the strange text menu I was seeing? Here are the two menus:
8066 8067

The right one is the odd one. The differences are a bit subtle, but are definitely there. You can see it most in the title line.

Anyway, thanks for all the help - and we learned something about Powershell vs cmd!
