1434634 2017-04-27 22:52:00 Im confused
Does you Daughter have MSOffice/word installed ? If so, what version ?
What format did she save in & give to the lecturer ?
Perhaps the doc she handed in was corrupted somehow .

Most students will be using Word , I cant imagine the lecturer wont be able to open Word Docs . Its pretty much the default
She may be able to get MSOffice student edition through the institution shes studying at.

If you dont want to buy MSOffice
office.live.com

I cant imagine word online will be a pleasant experience though . Not sure if Word Online can save your Doc's to PC (surely you can ?)

Just tried it, and its surprising quick ( that will of course be dependant on your internet speed), and yes you have the option to save the file to your own Computer, as well as insert any Pictures as well from your Own PC. The programs is a cutdown version of the Actual word (some features are missing).

You need a Microsoft account to use it, so if you don't have one its easy enough to create a free outlook.com account. :)

An you can't buy these packages on disc ? Only downloadable ?

The open office - does not have a word count option . So we should try OO again an see if lecturer can open it ?

My girl is mostly after any option that works that has a word count till we find suitable budget lol for word package . . . .

1434639 2017-04-28 04:13:00 Open the doc in Google Docs/Drive then do a word count. Though it seems word count can be done in Open Office (wiki.openoffice.org).

There is also Abiword, (https://www.abisource.com/) a word processor...

Perhaps OpenOffice isnt saving as a .doc or docx by default.

All just guesses with seeing the actual docs.

Bugger Word . You don't need it .
Use Libre Office, same free thing, but better .

And save as . rtf .

1434642 2017-04-28 06:05:00 Personally, and as a long time word user in various companies, Word really excels for advanced features, and by saving as the Normal dot format(s) (has advantages) for global templates. All to speedily, with minimal errors to produce reports that don't really change in structure. So if producing mass reports, and inputting little numerical data and content, advanced features are a great help. Hence a 10-20 minute Word report could be done in about a minute or 2, once customized as a advanced auto template. I did this for many years.

Of course it's not for everyone. Word I think encompasses (or tries to) for all, from primary school kids to Corporate/ Professionals. It's not really needed for those that do infrequent fundamental reporting, without any stringent or regimented purpose.. Also I seen many users, never bothering to try advanced features, which would greatly help - cause no incentive to (apply/learn) do so. Hence a free processor could suffice.

Adopting advanced features are massive time savers really - Field Codes (particularly the nifty popup auto generated fill-in boxes (adamprescott.net). Also Custom Styles, Cross Ref's - Bookmarks (www.docs.is.ed.ac.uk) (PDF), Macros's, Mail Merge, etc saved us heaps of time. I think none of the free word processors could ever match those. I know most people would never use advanced features. But it kept me employed for over 15 years in a large corporate company. Depends who the reports are for too, and the dollar values of the reported results ... we had to generate reports, often 15 a day,, to senior managers and CEO's for major NZ Produce Companies...so we we were trained to use advanced word features.

1434643 2017-04-28 06:56:00 Have you tried Google Docs?

It seems to work well, have word count and can save to a bunch of different formats.
