750051 2009-02-21 11:44:00 The kids have been getting some unpleasant stuff at times on MSN. 2 questions:
1/ Can you block it when not wanted via the router, if so which ports etc?
2/ Does the browser log the converstions? Is that possible please?

Many thanks

750052 2009-02-21 12:08:00 Hi DrMD,

As far as Im aware MSN / Windows Live Messenger uses a variety of ports. Most routers dont specifically "block" internal ports from getting out as far as I am aware, unless you do it on a machine-by-machine basis with a software firewall.

The browser doesnt log conversations, but there is software out there that will do it for conversations on your LAN. Im not sure about the results though, havent tried it, only heard they exist. Also Im not sure how alternate mail clients such as Pidgin or Meebo would affect things either.

What kind of unpleasant stuff on MSN have they been getting ?

If you mean unpleasant messages etc.., then no you cant block in via the router, but there is an option under where it lists all the contacts say something like let only contacts contact me or something like that, and that should stop the unpleasant messages etc..

it has been a few years since I used MSN / Windows live messenger (I use aMSN to talk to my friends instead of used MSN / Windows live messenger), so I am not too sure exactly where to do this.

I think you can turn that on in MSN / Windows live messenger, have a look thought the options, but bear in mind if the kids are copy savvy then they could turn it off.

Hope this helps :)

Turn on message history in Tools- Options and they'll be saved in your My Documents folder in its own folder called My Received Files -> Message History or something.

750055 2009-02-22 03:17:00 There's also an addon called Messenger Plus (http://www.msgplus.net/) that provides a large variety of extra features, like chat logging, which may be helpful. I used to use it with MSN 4 - 5, but haven't really needed it since so can't say anything about its current incarnation. I can say that it did use to come in mighty handy at times! Perhaps it'll have some useful functionality for you? Growly (6)
750056 2009-02-22 03:52:00 Only thing is if you use Messenger Plus, then your kids are gonna know about it
If you turn on Logging, the kids are gonna know about it.
Thats why if you want to be discrete then you cant use software on their machines such as MsgPlus or the built-in Logging, as it tells you at the start of a conversation that the chat is being logged and that you should also inform your contact that its being logged.

750057 2009-02-22 05:29:00 you could try a hidden keylogger..... Blam (54)
750058 2009-02-22 11:24:00 Doesnt generally show what is being received unless it captures Screenshots regularly.

Thats why network sniffing is generally the *only* way.
