| 749957 | 2009-02-21 03:43:00 | Hi there, Your advice please. I am wanting to download either Fruity loops or some other music software, and the minimum system requirements are 512mb Ram, 2.0ghz...and preferrably a ASIO soundcard. My computer specs are CPU:Intel P4 1.6GHZ Memory:256MB RAMBUS HDD:80GB,7200rpm M/B Intel Original 850 Chipset Sound card is Sound Blaster Vibra 128 1.Now my problem is, I thought I could possibly just upgrade the RAM. I phone the place I bought the computer from about five years ago, and they said that it was too expensive to upgrade RAMBUS, and I should just buy a new computer, motherboard for around 600-700$ 2.I rang another shop...who said, no problems, bring it in and we can just put in another stick of Ram to take it up to 512MB. 3.Then rang a third shop who said, the same as the first, that Rambus is really expensive but you could try getting it off the internet and having it installed. So.... I looked on trademe and found some entries for RAMBUS RD RAM, IG (2X512MB) PC800-45RIMM, 184-PIN ECC FOR $200.00 I rang back the first shop who I originally bought the computer from and told him could i just buy it off the net, and he said it was dodgy buying anything over the internet, and that it has happened before with people where their computers keep crashing after installing it. I dont have much money...and I thought buying it off the internet sounded good and a cheaper option.I dont know who to believe Does anyone have any advice. Thanks Kindly |

| 749958 | 2009-02-21 03:51:00 | 200 dollars for RAM! Sell your PC on trade me for 50 bucks or so, and buy/build a new waaay faster on for 500 or so. Ram is usually cheap but I think the type of ram you have is so old, its vintage! |

| 749959 | 2009-02-21 04:12:00 | RAMBUS memory or as it was known RDRAM was a total FLOP :yuck: It was a type of RAm that was / IS way over priced, and didn't perform as it was meant to - other types of RAM were developed ( type we use today) anyone who was unfortunate enough to buy a computer with RAMBUS would be in for a shock at the price of the RAM. The two shops who said it would be cheaper to buy a new Board/RAM were correct. Like DDR1 and DDR2 they are not compatible with boards that have RAMBUS. If you want a heart attack on RAMBUS pricing Have a Look at this (http://www.rdramrambusmemory.com/) - open the links - I think the Price is USA  |

As there is a bit of a lag in NZ with technology we didnt see too many RDRAM boards. But you've had 5 years out of a computer that is very very good in my opinion especially since you didn't upgrade. Others in those 5 years have had motherboards fry after a year or two thanks to the bad caps going around at that time on boards so I wouldn't be complaining. |

| 749965 | 2009-02-21 05:17:00 | Well I would say the Shop "Should" have known - RAMBUS came out in the late 90's it was around for a few years but due to its actual poor performance and over pricing compared to other RAM bit of History (en.wikipedia.org) - it soon got phased out. Regarding pricing back 5 years ago - PC components have dropped hugely, yes earlier PC's were much more expensive than todays counterparts. If you look at the links Blam6 posted they are about right for whats available today - just depending on what you want. I remember one external CD Writer I purchased when they were all the in thing - found the receipt when we moved a few years back - just under $1000.00 for a 2 speed external CD writer - Never use it these days but still got it, and it still works. |

While you could join them on the one cable its not an ideal solution. Do you want to go to that much expense? All the links to Trademe PCs are not a good idea. There is no warranty, no after sales service, and god knows what crap parts they use. You need quality brand parts if you are going to do it. Up to you. I'd probably just buy the RAM. RD Ram must be installed in pairs and in the correct slots. |
