749736 2009-02-20 19:10:00 Can anybody tell me if a Compaq Presario 700 Laptop has a CMOS Battery?

I have been told that they use the normal battery and a capacitor to hold the settings.

I have been running mine without the battery and it has started completely loosing it’s CMOS Settings over night if the power is disconnected. It shows all the symptoms of the usual CMOS Battery failure and as the machine is about 8 years old that comes as no surprise.

Next question, if it has one, where is it and how do I get to it? :D

PS It’s fine with the normal battery installed. :thanks

749737 2009-02-20 19:16:00 According to this (repair4laptop.org) site yes. Here's (www.geocities.com) a link to the page about the cmos (rtc) battery and instructions on what needs to be removed to get to it. stormdragon (6013)
749738 2009-02-20 21:03:00 Thanks stormdraggon.

Well fancy having to completely dismantle a laptop just to get to the cmos battery.

I'll need to pluck up courage.

749739 2009-02-20 22:11:00 She's apart and there is a cmos battery which is flat, well 1 . 8v

Now, what do I do about the heatpad? Can I use normal grease when replacing it of is that taboo?

It has what looks like a cellophane cover at the moment and I've never seen inside a Laptop before so don't know what the protocol in when replacing the CPU Heatsink .

Any help appreciated . :thanks

749740 2009-02-20 22:18:00 It will lose settings with no CMOS battery .

And if that goes flat, it probably wont go . Because it wont find any hardware etc in the system (ie: the hdd) to boot from

The other battery is so you can use it without power (which is obviously different to the CMOS battery)

There's a link here ( . geocities . com/hpmsgs/700xx/heat_spreader . html" target="_blank">www . geocities . com) from the link SD posted

I think thats what you want

You are not greasing a machine so don't use normal grease . Normal grease is used to lubicate moving parts .

Thermal grease, (Paste or Compound), has another function only it and thermal pads can provide . Surfaces of components and heatsinks is never entirely flat . There are small invisible gaps between the two when components and heatsinks are combined . Air is a poor heat conductor, therefore the gaps have a very negative effect on the heat transfer . To fill these gaps, use thermal grease only .

Sorry Burnzee, I meant the normal silicone grease you use on CPU's and heatsinks . It seems to have a cellophane material there at the moment???
No sign of ever being any silicone grease .

Yep Speedy I realise the difference between the two batteries and can't understand why I was told that model laptop didn't have a cmos battery because it certainly does .

Anyway, there could be some parts for sale shortly . :)

749744 2009-02-21 19:02:00 Well the job is all done and it’s going like a rocket. :) No screws left over but I’m still a little concerned about how the heatsink attaches to the CPU. Anyway, I put on some of that silicone grease and I guess I will find out soon enough if that wasn’t what was required.

I’m still gobsmacked that one has to remove the screen, keyboard, everything just to get to the CMOS Battery.

And thanks again for those links stormdraggon, they were a great help.
