749522 2009-02-19 19:40:00 Has anyone had any experience with Giga Recovery, part of Giga Computers in getting data back?

Or recommend any other recovery company.

I had what might be a fried HDD but it has personal and client data on it I want to try and get back.

749523 2009-02-20 03:38:00 have you considered having a go at getting it back yourself? ive managed to on a couple of hard drives one corrupt and the second dead)

if its dead dead as in doesnt live at all then you can (carefully) swap the circuit board for another of the same model (i managed it and im not that brilliant with that kinda stuff)

if it lives but wont read there is programs like GetBackData for NTFS (thats what i used) that can do some pretty crazy things as far as finding and extracting files from the drive

I know im not answering your question really but you can save alot of money this way.

If moneys no barrier then i reckon your safe with any data recovery company as they all basically use the same process

749524 2009-02-20 04:19:00 Yes I will give it a try. I ordered a new Drive of the Same make/model so will try swapping the Circuit boards and see how I go.

Seagate SATA 750Gb 32Mb Cache - ST3750330AS

HDD Spins but burning smell from the PCB so a simple switch might do the job or I might have two dead HDD's.

I pulled an old dead 80Gb IDE one to bits today and it was simple enough, even had a look inside. It was totally dead prior to me messing about with it but now it goes intermittently which is strange. It even shows up on the PC for a second or two then goes away, it never did that before:-)

749525 2009-02-20 04:21:00 yeah it is relatively straightforward, just dont touch the disks if you delve that far into the drive, form memory you dont have to. And if its burnin smell youl probaly find that replacing the pcb will bring the drive back to new! hueybot3000 (3646)
749526 2009-02-20 04:25:00 Well even if it does not work it will be a bit of a challenge i have always thought of trying.

I have an old Maxtor SATA 160Gb drive here but it does not spin. I looked on Ebay and they sell PCB boards only for that same model. Might have been nice had it just been the PCB on that drive to try it out on.

749527 2009-02-20 04:38:00 good luck to ya, sounds like you have far to many dead hard drives around hueybot3000 (3646)
749528 2009-02-20 04:54:00 LOL Well over the years a few have died, but I seem to keep them instead of throw them like a lot of other stuff.

A few CD drives from way back, one is a 2x cd rom, a couple of DSL modems, an old zip drive, several HDD's, boxes of stuff really. I did Auction off a box of stuff once then a few weeks later went looking for something and realised I had sold it:-)

I guess I am a horder. About 10 big plastic boxes of computer stuff I never look in from one year to the next. Manuals galore, cards of all sorts.
