749382 2009-02-19 18:35:00 I work with a USB attached external hard drive with either my PC or laptop. Therefore every time I boot I get Windows XP searching all of the hard drive, popping up that window, and asking if I want to download photos, etc. I don't want that, just as I don't want that each time I plug any other device into my USB ports.

How do I permanently stop this bit of useless Microsoft "helpfulness".
dveitch (6045)
749383 2009-02-19 18:46:00 I don't know te answer to that except to say you can safely cancel this "helpful" search when it pops up dugimodo (138)
749384 2009-02-19 19:20:00 You can turn off auto play, but that will affect every drive, not just one.

Instructions here (www.nirmaltv.com) -

The other option is to press and hold down the Shift key, that stops autoplay when you plug some device in or insert a CD/DVD/USB Drive.

Have not tried This here (antivirus.about.com) - so make a restore point before altering the reg.

OR Microsofts version (support.microsoft.com)

749385 2009-02-20 00:15:00 Thanks, Wainuitech, I tried all those but nothing worked.

Run/Gpedit.msc - that file is not on this machine
HKEY-......\Explorer - Explorer is there but without the entry NoDriveTypeAutoRun
Your second option took me to a web page with a suggested file to make and run. It certainly ran but, after reboot, there is no change.

I have Windows XP Home SP3.

Any more ideas?

749386 2009-02-20 00:20:00 try this method:

antivirus.about.com

You prob don't have gpedit.msc because you have XP home

749387 2009-02-20 06:43:00 Thanks, Blam6, but nothing seemed to work when I scrolled down the registry but the "Find" tool found it. Now I hope. dveitch (6045)
749388 2009-02-20 07:34:00 search for and download tweakui for xp that will allow you disable autorun on selected drives give the usb drive you dont want to autorun a unique drive letter. beama (111)
749389 2009-02-21 18:54:00 Thanks, beama. Doing the things suggested so far in the Microsoft lists and as hacks from the web pages suggested by previous responses to this question have not worked. I hope this will. dveitch (6045)
749390 2009-02-22 18:19:00 Tweakui has worked a treat. Thanks dveitch (6045)
