560705 2007-06-19 22:18:00 OK . . after Kbits, which I assume is thousands of bits, the next step is Mbits . . and is that Megabits or Milibits Maxibits or Minibits?

And the Mbits is (what?) millions or ten-thousands of bits?

I want the King's standards reinstalled .

Kilo is thousands
Mega is Millions
Giga is billions (I think)
Tera, Peta then Zeta in order of scale
probably check Wki for the amounts of those to be sure .

560707 2007-06-19 23:26:00 The trick being to remember kilo bits is 1000, kilo bytes 1024 & so on .

Apart from the exceptions, like HDD manufacturers apparently mean 320GB as 320 000 000 000 not 343 597 383 680 .

560708 2007-06-20 00:14:00 1 Byte consists of 8 bits of data. winmacguy (3367)
560709 2007-06-20 00:25:00 Hi Joe. We have only used the Metric system for about 30 years. Re your:OK..after Kbits, which I assume is thousands of bits, the next step is Mbits..and is that Megabits or Milibits Maxibits or Minibits? And the Mbits is (what?) millions or ten-thousands of bits? I should imagine that most people would not have a clue how to answer your query. I was interested to read a US of A woodworkers' book recently and find that although the authors were using the old Imperial measurements as a base, they had bastardised it by creating decimalisation... such as three inches and seven-tenths of an inch. 3 7/10". Weird. You'll like Metric when it eventually arrives. Scouse (83)

Well yes but...

This is the best one-page explanation I could find to clarifywhat i was getting at (www.t1shopper.com)

560712 2007-06-20 00:54:00 SurferJoe - No-one does metrics, but a lot of people get done by it.
(The farm is half as big, it is almost twice as far to town, the fences are a great deal longer, and the tax is twice as much. A consoling thought is that they have never converted chooks (chickens), as eggs still come in dozens.)
As a practical unit of measurement, the Pascal is about as useful in single unit quantities as Farads. The deg. centigrade for temperature is quite useful, but having a separate unit of length just for dressmakers (the centimetre) is a fool of an idea.
And those other things?
A byte is from a spider, a nybble is from a goldfish, while a terrabyte is from a shark, piranha, car salesman, or alternatively the minimum RAM for the next M$ O$.
The metric system was found to be essential for enabling bean-counters, CEO's and their immediate associates to enumerate without taking their shoes off.

560713 2007-06-20 01:25:00 OK..so why do hotdogs come in 12-packs and the buns in 10's? SurferJoe46 (51)

SurferJoe46 is American, it would be easier for him to understand if you use "Stolen Barrels of Oil' .

So

Giga is billions of stolen Barrels of Oil

Hope this helps :)
