561512 2007-06-26 00:30:00 Wow to vote at 16 .... I personally don't think its a great idea because surely a vote means your considered an adult???? I'm not saying 16 year olds shouldn't be respected if your worth respecting, I'm just saying thats an awful lot of responsibility. I know there are many responsible teens out there, I was 15 when I moved out on my own, had to pay the bills, earn a living etc but ...... if I were a 16 year old who had the power of a vote I would consider it condescending to not be allowed to gamble or enter a casino or drink alcohol, yet have the power to help choose a government. Thats how I would see it I guess. never-u-mind (6500)
561513 2007-06-26 00:41:00 I don't know what made Sue propose such a bizarre request

she likes the attention......she always did..............she also wants to collect votes for her party........they all do........many laws and political changes are not made because sense or decency or whatever demand them they're made for political gain/expediency .........in the 'antismacking' bill many parties voted not cause they give a damn but cause they were doing a 'you scratch my back I'll scratch yours' deal........

NEVER trust a politician.........

561514 2007-06-26 03:41:00 It's not about collecting votes. See my post earlier up; most teens in an average year 9 class would vote for national. Besides, even if all the voters who are 16-17 vote for the green party, what's the problem? The green party is only around 8% support or so, if lowering the voting age means 42% of voters are in a 2 year age bracket, the problem really isn't with teens.

The number of active voters has been going down lately, this is an effort to rejuvenate voter support. Get 'em hooked young, educate them about voting and who to decide who to vote for and you've got a generation interested in preserving and supporting democracy. Unless, of course, you support National's ideals of dictatorship.

Those opposed have also yet to prove that voting is significantly more dangerous to teens and society than having sex or driving.

No matter who you vote for, they all end up lying to you and not doing what they said they would. Or giving it to you in a really watered down version. Well, all of them except National, who for the last 2 elections seem to have garnered more votes while having no policies

561516 2007-06-26 08:56:00 There should be a cut-off for people who choose imarubberducky as a username. Preferably at the neck.

If you think you're so mature to vote, drink, f*** etc then you're too over-imbibed to think, let alone proffer a sane opinion to parliment.

Grow up another twenty years, then let us hear what you think.

Lord help us if it's anything remotely close to what you've got to say!

Oh by the way, your garfield [ex]avatar really wasn't any better, sorry break it to you :groan:

561517 2007-06-26 08:56:00 Most 16 year olds I know would vote for the party that had the one policy that would make their life easier with no regard whatsoever to the well-being of the country. That's the nature of children (I'm not saying 16 year olds are children at all - my point is that children tend to forget about other people often when making decisions, and there's a bit of that left when you're 16).

This goes as far as voting for the greens because they would legalise marijuana.

They (mostly) don't have to pay taxes, don't have to drive, don't have to raise children, don't have to work, and therefore experience very little of the sort of things that enable a voter to make a good judgement as to the policies that they believe would be good for the country. Most of them have no interest in political issues, and wouldn't have a clue what impact tax cuts, for example, would have on the country and other NZ citizens, and nor would many of them care.

Sure, there are 16 and 17 year olds that are mature enough to vote, but it's just something that you have to get over. When I was 16, I worked, drove, paid taxes, and usually had at least a somewhat informed opinion on political issues. If 16 year olds like I was at the time could vote, it wouldn't be too much of an issue. But most aren't. In the same way, many people argue that some 14 year olds are mature enough to have sex - yet bringing the age of consent down to 14 would of course be a terrible decision.

I'm speaking as someone who is under 18, and knows how the majority of 16-17 year olds think and act.

Allowing all 16-17 year olds to vote would be a horrible move that would reduce the integrity of elections.
