749991 2009-02-22 01:33:00 Yes Vista and Laptops have/need more processes than XP and desktops.
I have started a database of all the processes I find running on machines that I look after, so that I know what they do and what can be got rid of. But that is a big job.

I will print your list out and go through it on my database in the next few days to let you know what I think you may be able to ditch.

But the other thing is that if you have been installing and removing lots of programs over the life of the machine the registry will have become bloated and as far as i know THERE IS NO WAY to compact it. I use a free program called NTREGOPT this squeezes it a bit, but not to what you would have if you re-installed Windows (don't forget to backup up all of your data first !

I find this site helpful in finding out what each process does

749992 2009-02-22 07:51:00 I was able to use msconfig and removed 3 startup programs. I was wondering if you guys think i could eliminate another couple. There were two start-up programs for WiFi message processing (i have a laptop), do you think i could "tick" those too? All i'd have to do is turn on my Wifi and it'd be okey dokey, right? lol

I really appreciate this a lot guys, we're down to 64 processes when i have internet and task manager running.

749993 2009-02-22 07:56:00 Get ccleaner and delete the entries there.

No if you delete the wifi stuff, it probably wont work properly. Leave it there

Uninstall / disable windows defender, that'll get rid of MSASCui.exe

749994 2009-02-22 08:00:00 Also, in services(Run>services.msc) you can disable unneeded stuff. Blam (54)
749995 2009-02-22 08:24:00 One question no ones asked ---- How much memory does this laptop have?

This Vista PC I'm on has 58 processes running - and starts within 30 -40 seconds from completely off to fully usable .

All the indexing is turned on, about the only things turned off are Windows Defender and certain auto updater's Eg: Itunes/Quicktime/Apple .

749996 2009-02-22 09:12:00 The Start-Up time is fine, I just thought it was unhealthy to have so many applications running.
And story-time...
My roommate and i were both playing online games, which involve time ticking away, his "car" in the game moves faster than mine, but our clock ticks away at the same speed. I thought this may be because of all the processes i have running.
I've heard its best to have 30-40 running vs the number i've had running.

I've got a 320GB Hard Drive and a 1.8 Processor.

That maybe the case with XP, NOT Vista.

And especially when its a Dell/HP whatever. They install too much crap

Probably, the only way to fix it, get rid of Vista, format it, install XP / other OS, and the drivers etc

As i mentioned I have average of 58 -65 processes running, not slow at all.

Click The start orb, type in System - select System from the results.

What is the laptops Rating, it will be a number between 1 -5.9.

Have a look next to the number, click on Windows Experience Index - there is will tell you where the "lack of power" is.

750000 2009-02-22 10:34:00 My rating is 2.9...

I just made the game go faster by changing my power settings from Optimized to High Performance...
That game i was talking about goes as fast as my roommates now...

I also looked at his Computer, and he's got 100 processes running...

So, i should be fine then? I've got 67 processes running right now...
