| 561015 | 2007-06-20 12:06:00 | I know I know I know.........and I've been around long enough to have learnt that there are very few wonder businesses in the world. Rakon are worth a punt but patents mean nothing in some places. Very true, but only invest if you can afford to loose the money and you don't need to make a massive return in a hurry. In terms of "wonder businesses" it all depends on the level of innovation and the brains trust at the top and how good that company is at identifying a niche market and filling that market by partnering up to provide the right product faster than anyone else can and then repeating the process if necessary somewhere else if that is required. For the last 6-7 years those types of companies have certainly existed although not necessarily in NZ, but we are producing a few of them you just have to know what to look for and be patient. |

Except that the current view is that the NZ dollar will continue to be high and may climb more against the $US. Actually what is happening is the $US dropping against most other currencies. The $NZ will eventually fall away but not while we have high interest rates and a good economy. |

That's what I was told by the 'trusted family friend' mentioned in the original post, and I plan on going by it. It's going up, not down right now, and we have VERY good interest rates, which is good for me, and good for keeping the dollar up, as my understanding is that overseas people (especially in Japan) want our high interest rates and like to invest money in NZ. |

| 561021 | 2007-06-21 05:26:00 | Yep That's what I was trying to say above (the bit about only investing in shares over the long term). I'll wait until the next sale, so I'll have enough left after taking out $5k, then head to PSIS to grab the term deposit ($5k is the minimum). That will make me $211 in 6 months if I've worked it out correctly. PSIS interest rates don't look very good compared to raboplus. PSIS also isn't a registered bank, so your money isn't as safe as it would be in a bank. PSIS also ran into trouble a number of years ago, and I did hear that many people lost money. |

The psis rate is 8.4% on maturity, or 8.1% compounding daily (8.46% after 6 months of compounding), compared to the raboplus one of 8.15% for the same term. However, after what you have said about PSIS I am more inclined to go for the raboplus one. |

| 561023 | 2007-06-21 09:05:00 | May I suggest putting it into a US Dollars call account - Not a bad idea, however most foreign currency accounts require a minimum deposit before they pay interest (typically $10000). Also any gains made because of changes in the exchange rate may attract the interest of the IRD. |

| 561024 | 2007-06-21 23:07:00 | Just keep your cash in the bank mate. Minimal risk, consistent interest gain, no headache. With the small amount you're talking about a loss will hit you big time and a potential win is too risky. | Greg (193) | ||
