562495 2007-06-24 22:34:00 I'm moving to an area where I can easily see Ak Airport across the water, quite some distance.

I would like to listen in to what goes on and wonder what sort of radio would be best, hand held scanner or a "desktop"? Makes/models?

Anyone here have any experience and/or suggestions?

562496 2007-06-24 22:57:00 I don't know about brands, but handheld ones seem to work quite well.
Dad had (or used) two at one stage. One was the work one, and it was very good. Also very expensive too I might add.
The other is one that he paid for, and is a lot cheaper. it is more of a consumer device, and works fine, although it doesn't have the same range as the more expensive, and it is very quiet (speaker wise).

Basically, they seem to fall into two classes. The general hobbyist type ones that the average jo blogg can afford and then there are the specialised aviation ones that you pay through the nose for.

562497 2007-06-25 01:04:00 Hey Bryan .

I looked into this over a year ago, as I could spend hours at Wgton airport listening to the chatter .

Since then, I've been somewhat . . . . distracted . . . . . however I googled and there's a NZ website that may have everything you need . The site (back then) looked quite hap-hazard and unprofessional, but seemed to be the place to go for scanners without paying big $$$'s .

I assume you have the frequencies for ATC in Auckland?

If you can't find the site, or money isn't a problem! . . . . my research showed DSE was the best bet . Just know your frequencies and (as you are doing here) get a few ideas before hitting the shop .

Check it out on Google, I have one and its performance is unbelievable.

562500 2007-06-27 00:27:00 Your hobby may not last too long. I work at the airport and there have been rumours about locking in the radio channels. I don't know exactly how they plan to do this but from what I understand they are researching some sort of new radio technology that will keep "unwanted ears" from listening in. Not too sure if this would actually work. That would mean that every radio user on the airport would have to upgrade their equipment appropriately?

Seems all a bit OTT to me.

Cheers
