| 561871 | 2007-06-23 04:06:00 | Hi everyone, I have had a Sony home theatre system for just over two years now. The function button on the remote control does not work (changes the player from DVD to radio to auxiliary inputs). I dont think it ever has, but it's two years down the line, so I figure it is too long for me to go back to the shop and the extended warranty doesnt cover it. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I can go to get a replacement remote control? Its a Sony DAV-S880 and the remote is a RM-SS880 (It is silver with a transparent blue cover that glows in the dark). I know I could just get a universal remote, but I dont regard them as being as good, and I would prefer to keep the system as original as possible. Im sure that I could ring Sony or their local service agent, but get the feeling this will cost me a bundle! Lol So basically are there any other sources anyone knows of? Any help on this is much appreciated- thanks everyone! (For some reason or another also, my aerial is missing- did I ever get it? I cant remember- it was installed by the shop, back in the days when I was much more of a newbie and didnt want to do it myself! Lol I can get a replacement aerial for this from DSE I guess) (NB no comments please re: extended warranty- it did pay off for me when the optical assembly needed replacing!) |

| 561872 | 2007-06-23 04:19:00 | Remote controls are a problem . I bought a non-working DVD for $2, and fixed it with a 34c component . I could buy a remote control for it for $29 . 95 . A new DVD like that would cost about $60 . :D I would be inclined to try to repair the control . It will be the button contact . Most remotes use a very simple switch . Pusing a button causes a pair of gold plated contacts on the board to be bridged with a graphite "dot" on the bottom of the button . You can add graphite with a "Black Beauty" pencil . Remember those . . . the thick, very "soft", pencils for young kids? You can still get a modern equivalent . I've bought them in a PaperPlus shop . Called something like "learner" . |

I had a problem with our new Philips DVD/TAPE combined unit and Philips talked me through the problem then offered to send me a spare remote, as they could also cause faults. Philips reckoned they had lots of spare remotes around the place as TVs which had been faulty were replaced dumped etc and the perfectly good remotes were just gathering dust. Needless to say I accepted their offer. Remotes can give trouble - but two years is less than the Customers Guarantee Act allows so I would return to the seller. Also there was a shop in Christchurch whose name escapes me that supplied me with remotes in the past. They had a system for fixing and selling them. Darned if I remember their name but they were on Colombo Street (fat lot of help that). Alternative (I realise you don't really want to go this route) one of the remotes sold that can run anything - or so they claim. Try Dick Smiths for these. Tom |

Or go to any Retravision store or similar they should be able too get one for you no problems To test that your remote works or various buttons, get a video camera and aim the remote at the camera lens and press the buttons you will see the IR light flash if it works. | 561877 | 2007-06-24 22:21:00 | The shop on Colombo St is Ascot TV www.remotes.co.nz Yes of course it is. Thanks for reminding me zqwerty. Funny how you can forget things that are fairly important, and can so easily remember when somebody reminds you. Glad I was able to help anyway (if I did!). I have bought a couple of remotes off them over the years. Tom |

| 561879 | 2007-06-30 06:01:00 | Thanks for the responses everyone, I figure I will give Sony and Retravision a try and see what their prices are like- I'll also see what price I can get them from overseas given the Kiwi $ value at the mo . Graham L, I will have a go at opening it up- won't try too hard though since the only way to get in is to pry off the trnasparent plastic top, using clips with no way of opening from underneath! Thanks Ninjabear, but definitely not up for a universal remote! |
