562223 2007-10-02 09:35:00 Right well, I just finshed putting the new beast together! Took me around 4 hours, from everything in boxes, to turning it on . . I know thats ages, but its my first build and I like to take my time and get it right . .

Anyways, I thought I'd post up a list of the parts I used, and the prices I paid, for the benefit of any other members thinking of building a new system .

This is based on george12's basic system posted a couple pages back . Made a few changes with the help of members here and searching all over the web . .

Here goes;

Mother board: $209
ASUSTEK CORE 2 DUO P5K INTEL P35 CHIPSET, DDR2, LGA 775

CPU: $335
INTEL CORE 2 DUO E6750 2 . 66GHZ 1333FSB LGA775

RAM: $193
CORSAIR TWIN2X2048-6400 2 X 1024MB DDR2-800 XMS2-6400 5-5-5-12

HDD: $138each (I got 2)
SEAGATE BARRACUDA (320GB) 7200 . 10 16MB, SATA II NCQ

PSU: $241
ENERMAX LIBERTY 620W MODULAR POWER SUPPLY ATX12V 2 . 2 SLI READY

CD/DVD Writer: $70
ASUSTEK DRW-1814BLT LIGHTSCRIBE BLACK SATA

Case: $173
LIAN-LI PC-7S ALUMINIUM CASE

Graphics Card: $530
EVGA e-GeForce 8800gts, Superclocked Edition

Keyboard: $52
LOGITECH ULTRA FLAT KEYBOARD

Mouse: $87
LOGITECH MX-620 CORDLESS LASER MOUSE

OS: $150
WINDOWS XP HOME w/ SP2

TOTAL = $2316

Needless to say, the budget didnt allow for a new screen yet :o

Other than the graphics card, I bought all of the above from computer lounge, and received a (very) slight discount on the lot . And free shipping . .

Hope this gives some insight for those of you looking to do the same!

I'd be interested to know what you all think about the system, and what you may have done differently etc, I'm very open to opinions!

562224 2007-10-02 11:04:00 Nice job. I can't say there is anything I'd do differently in your situation.

Where did you buy the parts from? I'm guessing Ascent by the prices.

562225 2007-10-02 12:32:00 Why not a quad-core? I thought prices had really come down but thats still a hell of a system. Love the GFX card and the XP SP2:thumbs: beeswax34 (63)
562226 2007-10-02 12:36:00 Damz could have got a Quad Core for about $150 more, but the question is whether he/she would be at any advantage by having one.

You have to do a LOT at once to keep all 4 cores busy and get your money's worth. In many cases a 2.66GHz 1.33GHz FSB Core 2 Duo will be faster, and you save $150.

There are many arguments for and against, and it's certainly not an obvious decision. I love the Q6600 but I too would have taken the E6750 in this case.

Yeah, at first I was going to go quad core, but after reading up about the pros/cons on here it didnt really seem as though I would make use of all four cores, so instead I bumped it up from the E6650 (2.33ghz) to the E6750 (2.66ghz).

I stayed up late last night installing drivers etc, now its nearly time to go to work, I want to try out the graphics though! As soon as I get home, I'll be installing bioshock! Gonna be a loong day at work :groan:

562228 2007-10-02 18:28:00 Cheers bud, you more or less designed it for me anyways! :p

I got the majority of the parts from www.computerlounge.co.nz, are the prices good, or a little high?
Damz (10942)
562229 2007-10-02 20:33:00 The prices are perfectly reasonable as long as they give good after-sales service. I haven't dealt with them before so I don't know.

They're cheaper than Ascent by a few % and about 10% more than the cheaper PriceSpy places, but you may well have made up for that difference in service.

562230 2007-10-03 06:52:00 Yeah when I called him he seemed decent. They run an actual store somewhere in the big smoke.. (Im in Wanganui:p )

Will soon see if a warranty claim comes up for some reason!

562231 2007-10-03 07:13:00 Sounds fine then. From what I've heard they're a decent outfit :) george12 (7)
562232 2007-10-05 03:48:00 DAMZ I've just got one of those Enermax Liberty PSU's it looks great, can't wait to fire my machine up.

I find the Lian-Li cases a bit boring ! I got a Coolermaster Wavemaster Blue it looks great, removeavle mother board and the finish on it is impeccable.

Just wish the rest of my pc bits would arrive !
