| 562754 | 2007-06-27 16:19:00 | If this was an intentional way to make people put the right grade in the right car, it would be round the wrong way . You could put 91 in a car that needed 95, but you couldn't put 95 in a car that would run on 91 . . . I think this is a throwback to the days of leaded and unleaded fuel being available in the same stations . The unleaded fuel nozzle was smaller to keep the leaded fuel from being installed in vehicles with catalytic converters . We (US) had regular unleaded, 87 Octane R+M/2, that ran in everything that required unleaded . . . Volvos included . If they could not run 87, they could not be imported . The higher octane had larger nozzles that would not fit into the fill necks of those requiring leadfree fuels . Some rednecks ripped out the restrictor plates and used whatever they wanted until it was time to perform a "smog test" where the vehicle would fail for "MMD" or modified/missing or defective devices . Now, all our fuel is unleaded and all the nozzles are the same small size . Lead going through a cat would render it useless pretty quick . |
