561858 2007-06-23 10:06:00 I was told that the Ucol was switching over to PC's, I can't vouch for any truth in the rumour though.

Its not unheard of in NZ for that to happen since many teaching institutions carry a lot of memories from the late 90's about Macs. It can also depend on what their IT department says and how Windows Server orientated they are as well as who gives them the cheapest deal hardware and OS wise.
It seems to be a somewhat different deal in the US lately with a lot more students buying new MacBooks to replace their PCs since they get very good student deals compared to what we get here.
At the end of the day it is a can be a bit of swings and roundabouts.

561859 2007-06-23 10:24:00 I get the impression the IT depatrment were so far up their own backsides they wouldn't even entertain the notion of looking at the PC platform, rather they wished to spend of thousands upon thousand upon thousands of dollars on new Mac gear every year, No matter that the big cheeses had already cottoned onto the fact they were paying a lot more money for a lot less performance.

Eventually the entire shipwreck went broke and was bailed out by the taxpayer.

Lets hope that less anal types are now in charge of where the money gets spent.

561860 2007-06-23 10:26:00 Linux?

No, they wanted to use their new PC's, not labour over the OS.

But just to show how important game capabilities are, The main reason seemed to be that they couldn't fathom spending 3 grand on a PC that could be used to sit in front of all night playing counterstike (and smoking weed)

That was meant to say they COULDN'T fathom spending 3 grand on a system incapable of playing counterstrike.

561861 2007-06-23 10:28:00 Going "on topic" for a second, MS press releases are as ridicules and untruthful as Apple press releases, Neither are news worthy.

I'm surprised anyone bothers to read them.

I don't know of too many IT depts that in edu that have to or can afford to upgrade their Mac hardware every year. Most prefer to stretch it out for as long as possible. About the only thing that will get upgraded as part of the deal will be the OS which is done without replacing the hardware-contrary to popular myth.

If the ship wreck went broke it probably had more to do with mismanagement than with hardware or software failure which is not all that uncommon when you have too many competing agendas.

561863 2007-06-23 10:44:00 I doubt what you know of any IT department carries any weight, The course was meant to be the best of its kind, running on current hardware, using current software. And yes, Mismanagement, right across the board, To the tune of something like 53 million.

At the time the course was held in very high regard, Surprised you aren't familiar with it, Being an "artistic" user yourself.

561865 2007-06-23 10:48:00 Lmao.

The Wanganui School of Design was welcomed into the "Hall of Fame" on NZ Mac (http://www.nzmac.com/) on the basis of their devotion to the use of Macintosh computers.

I follow platform developments on both Apple and Microsoft more often than I follow education developments, the two just happen to meet a lot of the time. The ones I mentioned earlier were Media Design School where I studied and Natcoll that I looked up a while back when considering another course. The other well known design college I know of is Whitecliffe School of art and design who do feature a lot of G4 eMacs in their ads.

The other comments I made were simply in response to your remarks Metla.

Unfortunately the print version of NZ Macguide is no longer in publication and I go US based Mac sites more than NZ Macguide because the bulk of their news comes from the US.
