563311 2007-06-27 06:58:00 the majority wouldn't have a clue and need to be protected from themselves.

No they don't.

What next? We should set up something to protect half wits giving money to Nigerians?

All playgrounds should have bouncy foam under the swings?

All teenagers should be given rubber cars?

You vote for all this nanny state stuff too do you?

563312 2007-06-27 07:11:00 My bank has recently started a txt code to mobile service when making an on-line transaction- they don't currently charge to do it. I signed up as soon as I got the e-mail from Nigeria and right after I bought my 1st Mac

No system in the world is going to stop you the user from giving away your banking details to a scam like that.

In the above case although I think Shortcircut was trying to be funny:rolleyes:, in the case of trojans and malware installing themselves on your PC when you visit a legit looking web page or click on that link on your email asking you to check if they are your photos (trojan installer), that kind of thing is a lot more difficult to install on OS X and even harder to get it to work where as it doesn't require any user intervention on a PC to achieve a better result.

The only other solution I can think of is for some sort of education or brochure when you buy a PC to inform you of how easy it is to get caught out by this stuff.

Most people don't even read the instructions on how to fully use their cellphone or dvd recorder (other than how to connect it and turn it on) Myth (110)

I agree!

Trouble is, a lot of people see a computer as just another appliance, and dont realise it needs a certain amount of user input and diligence to keep themselves safe and trouble-free on the interweb (or are too lazy or thick (or cheap)!).
I have cleaned a few machines for other people, invariably they either have never installed any internet security at all, or have never updated it or Windows, then go and download all kinds of crap, and are highly surprised when they get hacked/zombied/phished/dailered/virused, and their computer is running at a crawl.
I think people are being totally irresponsible if they dont protect themselves, before even going on the net (let alone online-banking).:annoyed: :D

Its like having sexual relations with millions of people without using a condom (ooer!)

563317 2007-06-27 08:41:00 I didn't realize the extent of the situation until I read the article. I guess that it is probably only going to get worse for banks and PC using customers as the scam artists get more creative in their methods. winmacguy (3367)
563318 2007-06-27 09:18:00 Hmmm my bank offers a free security key (that hangs on your keyring) for online transactions if you want it, so i have a little security key that generates a new 7 digit code every minute and i have to enter that code along with my other password and login to access my account.

Seems pretty foolproof to me

heres the link incase you have no idea what I am waffling about

563319 2007-06-27 09:29:00 How is it that before I voted and looked at the poll results I could see how each person had voted.........but after I had voted just saw the numerical (shown as bar chart) etc ? Is there perhaps a glitch and we should not be able to see how each person had voted at all ?..... or am I missing something (would not be surprising !!)
