561848 2007-06-23 07:47:00 I thought they said that about xp (www.macobserver.com) One for you winmacguy (the source I mean)

No problem, I knew that you were referring to the linked article with your comment.:D :p

561849 2007-06-23 09:14:00 If the article had been headlined " Vista is Microsoft's most secure system yet" I would agree with them.

I take it you haven't seen the inside of many design or production studios Metla. The only large magazine publishing house I know of that is a Microsoft shop running InDesign is ACP Media in Westhaven, just about every other decent sized place I can think of would use Macs in their studio with the exception of some corporate in house marketing departments that get by using MS Publisher.

It's a little bit hard to work in business if your not connected to the web these days ;)

It is the Apple hardware that carries a bit of a premium rather than the software although that gap is gradually reducing in NZ.

If you put your tiny slice of intelligence to work you would have noted I covered in my post what my knowledge of the industry was, I'm not going to repeat it.

I would be quite happy to believe your claim if it came from someone with a little bit more credibility, Where's JJJJ when you need him?

Anyone else going to claim that there are more macs involved in media industry then PC's?

And MS publisher is a red herring, Me old mate who runs a printing company worth a few million refuses to accept anything that is formatted by that program, He also keeps 2 macs whose sole purpose is to accept the jobs delivered in an apple format, they sit alongside the 40 or so PC's that do all the design work, admin tasks and run the printers.

I would tell him he had it the wrong way around, But hes a mean drunk at the best of times.Lmfao.

Agreed, that would be an interesting and unusual setup for a large scale printing operation considering that a Xserve licensing arrangement is much cheaper to run that a Microsoft setup for 10 users or more.

Maybe he spends too much time with a bottle in front of him...

Actually a man without a Mac will just use Windows until the proper hardware arrives. ;)

It would be a beautiful site.

Something akin to feeding christians to the lions.

Last time I walked into the Wanganui Chronicle building I saw dozens upon dozens of PC's, Not a single Mac, though I would presume there was at least a couple there somewhere.

Sure, small provincial paper after all, Only many many many times bigger then me old mates printing bizzo. How did they get it so wrong?

And I suppose the dozens of students who were training at the Graphic artist course at the Wanganui Ucol had no idea what they were doing when they bought custom built PC's off me.....

Being that all the apps used in graphic design are cross platform it doesn't surprise me. There are a number of colleges in Auckland that use Windows in the graphic arts dept and a similar number use Macs for graphic design and DV editing. I think Natcoll uses Macs and PCs. Media Design school use Macs in the design and print with PCs in the web design and DV as well I think. They also run both MS and Xerves. Their ad school uses Macs.
in terms of ad agencies, Saatchi's are all Mac in the design dept I think along with a number of other agencies.

Incidentally, what Windows app were they using for this course do you know? Wasn't Maya by any chance?
Myth (110)
561856 2007-06-23 09:58:00 The course is for four years, Branches off in many directions depending on what aspects they want to have their strengths in, from webdesign to 3d animation to publishing/design and layout. And hundreds of other areas.

They used the full suite of Adobe programs, 3D max, and dozens of others.

The computers provided by Ucol were all Macs, the vast majority of the students done all their "at home "work on the PC, Macdrive was a very popular app for them.

I was told that the Ucol was switching over to PC's, I can't vouch for any truth in the rumour though.

Linux?

No, they wanted to use their new PC's, not labour over the OS.

But just to show how important game capabilities are, The main reason seemed to be that they couldn't fathom spending 3 grand on a PC that could be used to sit in front of all night playing counterstike (and smoking weed)
