562263 2007-12-18 06:13:00 The motherboard supports dual channel. I figured 2 sticks of 512MB was better than one stick of 1GB. Incorrect assumption?
I doubt it will make much difference on an AMD system they're not particularly bandwidth hungry, if the price isn't that much different then 2x512 is probably the way to go.

Take into consideration that probably within 6months you'll want to go to 2gb and that 4x512 can lead to stability issues.

562264 2007-12-18 06:35:00 Can see what you mean. Might opt into the 2x1GB plan instead, not that much dearer.
Incidentally, if the motherboard has 4 RAM slots; one would assume it would be quite stable with all 4 filled. Yet your reply differs to assumption. Why?

Also, if one had 4 RAM slots, and only 2 modules, could one use the combination of either slots 1 & 3; or 2 & 4? Or is 1 & 3 preferential?

562265 2007-12-31 21:00:00 Had a look at the Asus M2A-VM HDMI, and rather liked the features.
Then, because Linux is my primary OS, had a look at the support of Linux with ATi/AMD chipsets. Unfortunately, ATi have rather random support to say the least.
For that reason (which for me is a major reason) I ditched the AMD/ATi chipset in favour of nForce.

This is what I am seriously considering...

Asus M2N-VM DVI (www.asus.co.nz)
AMD 4800+ X2 CPU (www.amdcompare.com)
Kingston ValueRAM 2x512MB (www.ascent.co.nz)

This is just the base starting point. As said previous, will upgrade other components (PSU, PCi-e graphics card) at a later point

What do you guys think? Should be fully compatible (though I don't really deal a lot in new hardware so seek confirmation)
Cheers :)Adding this harddrive (www.ascent.co.nz) to the above mix (namely coz I only have PATA drives here), as well as changing the RAM to this instead (www.ascent.co.nz)

Anybody see any issues/incompatibilities with the above setup before I order. There shouldn't be, I think I've researched this thoroughly enough
All the above just tips in under budget :)

562266 2008-01-23 21:14:00 I'd get 2X Geforce 8800's and a 37" LCD. Also, I suggest you invest in some liquid nitrogen cooling. And for todays punter a healthy dose of LED's and a clear case is a must. Actually you could go for 3X Strobe lights and put them out of synch, so you can incapacitate your competitors at all night CS LAN parties. Seriously though, looks ok. I want. Thebananamonkey (7741)
