562253 2007-11-08 07:41:00 I actually have a partition for games, half of them dont need to be re-installed if i trash the system drive.......and saved games remain also! SolMiester (139)
562254 2007-11-13 08:20:00 I Would Prefer the: Intel Pentium D LGA 775 E2180-Good performance, cheap, overclocks like crazy.

Intel X38 Northbridge Chipset: Integrated heatspeader for overclockers, low Nm process, decent.

WD500AAKS 500 GB Sata 2 16 MB cache: good value for money, fast in benchmarks, cool running, decent.

Patriot DDR2 1333 Mhz: Great for overclocks, insane memory performance.

Complete overkill for 99% of the population, the only benefit over the cheaper P35 is that it has support for 2 16x PEG slots and support PCIe 2.0. If your not running Crossfire then the P35 is just as good.

Once again complete overkill for the average user and even most overclockers. Unless your using phase change or dry ice its unlikely you ever max it out 1:1.

Go read the original post before you make stupid recommendations

It's hilarious how you go and spend great sums of money on insane (to the point of pointlessness) memory and motherboards, and then buy a budget CPU that probably costs less than half as much as your motherboard...

562257 2007-11-22 20:56:00 I'd like some Crucial Dominator with my C2Q/C2D, I like the fan that sits on top cooling the dimms....LOL SolMiester (139)
562258 2007-12-13 07:53:00 Looking to a possible minor upgrade. Money is reasonably tight so this is what I'm thinking of doing:
Get a 4400 or 4600 AMD x2 CPU, couple with a reasonble motherboard. Hoping motherboard will have SATA, PCi-e, and also integrated graphics (or I will be forced to push budget and buy cheap/second hand PCi-e card). DDR2 preferred for one RAM module. All this is in the now.
Later I will upgrade harddrive (from pata to sata), new PSU, possible quiet cooling. Current PSU is Enermax 425W

This to replace ailing motherboard and also give slight upgrade from single to dual core. Computer NOT used for gaming

Do-able?

Also, estimated budget for the above (now upgrades) if done myself (more than capable)

562259 2007-12-13 21:25:00 Look at either a Gigabyte or ASUS motherboard based on AMD 690G chipset by far the best intergrated chipset on the market by a BIG margin. Most of the boards have plenty of SATA ports, PCI and PCIe slots etc. Ive had good experience with the Asus M2A-VM HDMI in particular and its only $128 at Ascent.

Memory is so cheap at the moment you cant really go wrong just choose what ever suits the budget. Seeing as your not going to be using a seperate video card i dont think you'll need to upgrade the PSU, a 425w Enermex would be more than powerful enough for your upgrade.

Then, because Linux is my primary OS, had a look at the support of Linux with ATi/AMD chipsets. Unfortunately, ATi have rather random support to say the least.
For that reason (which for me is a major reason) I ditched the AMD/ATi chipset in favour of nForce.

This is what I am seriously considering...

Asus M2N-VM DVI (www.asus.co.nz)
AMD 4800+ X2 CPU (www.amdcompare.com)
Kingston ValueRAM 2x512MB (www.ascent.co.nz)

This is just the base starting point. As said previous, will upgrade other components (PSU, PCi-e graphics card) at a later point

What do you guys think? Should be fully compatible (though I don't really deal a lot in new hardware so seek confirmation)
Cheers :)

562261 2007-12-17 23:14:00 If the budget will allow try and make the jump to 2gb of memory. How come your getting two 512 sticks? did you say you only wanted one stick of memory?

Otherwise everything looks fine.

Otherwise everything looks fine. The motherboard supports dual channel. I figured 2 sticks of 512MB was better than one stick of 1GB. Incorrect assumption?
