750459 2009-02-23 01:41:00 Hi team, I am about to do a minor upgrade to my 3 year old system by adding an additional 2Gig of RAM and also want to add a second 500-750Gb HDD. Can anyone recommend a good, speedy drive to buy based on a balance between cost/speed.

The specs of my system are...
HP Compaq DC 7600 Convertible
Intel (R) Pentium (R) 4 CPU 3.20ghz
512meg RAM
XP Pro 2002 SP3
80Gb HDD WDC 800JD-60SLA0
22" Viewsonic LCD

Cheers
Dave.

750463 2009-02-23 02:24:00 I would personally take out the existing 512MB RAM and replace with a 2x1GB kit. Mixing brands and specs are usually just fine but I don't like the idea of it.

HDD - anything by Western Digital or Seagate....nothing else.

750464 2009-02-23 06:11:00 Western Digital are cheaper, and Seagate have been having issues lately.

Get your new RAM to replace your current stuff. Like qazwsxokmijn says, mixing them (most issues are caused by different timings) can lead to problems.

Hey, aren't you the always-recommend-Seagate advisor I remember..?

So what happened?

750466 2009-02-23 08:26:00 Prob seagates recent stuff up.

But personally I reckon both WD and Seagate is OK

They've both had firmware/HD issues before.

Seagate tends to fail less, but with their recent stuff up all the seagate flag wavers have switched to WD.

I still reckon Seagates better:p

This happened: www.theinquirer.net

But at least it was a programming error, not a mechanical failure, and is easily preventable with a firmware upgrade (provided your drive hasn't died yet)

For my next drive I think I'll go with Western Digital. Reasons being price and the fact that the last one I bought is surprisingly quiet

Everyone has and always will have issues. Just some issues are worse than others (IBM Deskstar)

Even SSD/Flash has issues, which is why for all their faults, I'll still be using hard drives as my preferred storage media. They've been around for 53 years which is longer than probably most of the people on this forum

Do you claim to have enough experience to rule out Hitachi & Samsung or can you only remember 2 brands?
