751520 2009-02-26 06:57:00 I blew up my bro's system .

Well he did ask me to re thermal paste his CPU when it was not essential . But regardless I will pay for the full replacement . He was going to upgrade his RAM before it broke, so I said, he will pay for the RAM and I will pay for everything else .

Before, for a 754 setup, DDR400 1GB cost around $100 these days . So for his advantage if he spends $100 he could get 2-4GB DDR2 .

OK . The usage is gonna be general admin work - MS Office, webmail and internet . No games, no photography other than viewing JPEG photographs and not even watching DVDs - that is what the lounge is for .

I have thought of the following:
ASUS or Gigabyte AM2 motherboard - micro ATX, builtin video - ~$100 .
AMD Sempron or Dual Core - $80-150 .
RAM - he pays .

Your comments?

751521 2009-02-26 07:11:00 Yeah I've always used Semprons with no probs Digby (677)

Is this the computer you are now posting about?

751523 2009-02-26 08:25:00 Yup it is. Mind as well do a complete rebuild. The 754 motherboard cost $80 new or used at $75 anyway with the chance of the RAM needing replacement too at 1GB $100 pricetag these days. Nomad (952)
751524 2009-02-26 08:34:00 Well when you put this one together take advice from Wainuitech.
Get a bigger hammer. Only a joke there but I wonder if you belong in the IT industry.

751525 2009-02-26 08:53:00 The Sempron is $50 so that is even better . A lot of the $100 Athlon dual cores are out of stock and come without a HSF which makes a unnecessary expense .

No . I am not in the IT industry thou I have fixed work colleague's computer on numerous occasions ie . , power issues and relocating a PC to another desk, connecting to the network, screen issues . In total I have built 3 PCs from scratch since 1992, we don't upgrade that often plus the 6 years at uni, I was using laptops or 2nd hand that is .

I work in statistics / benchmarking and strategic support . A bit of SQL data warehouse for data extraction, data mining . SAP, SAS etc . . .

751526 2009-02-26 17:26:00 Other things to consider:

what PSU does he have? and is it due for upgrade/replace too?

The motherboard, does it support SATA, if so, do you have SATA drives?

751527 2009-02-27 05:04:00 He has a iCute 350W or such . Came with the case . It is still working, if it blows he will just upgrade then .

I mean, not much point spending $100 or $200 for the PSU when the box value is only worth $200 or $300 . Ie . , $100 mobo, $50 CPU, $40 RAM, $100 HDD .

I used to buy iCute cases with a PSU. Traded the PSU for something a little better. In my opinion you need to have a good reliable PSU. Some problems can be tracked back to the PSU.

Some problems can be tracked back to the PSU. Good advice there  many people ignore the PSU - its better to spend a few $$ now on a good one, not some cheap item.

Saying the PSU will be replaced when it blows is dangerous - what say if and when it blows, it takes out the Motherboard, or any other component it is connected to ? ( mind you any PSU blowing can do that)

Regarding the CPU fitting - it should be ZIF (zero insertion force) meaning it should simply fall into place, with no pressure, the only pressure and that will be light is the clamp /heat sink with thermal paste ;) holding every thing down.
