751439 2009-02-26 03:37:00 A number of posters here have recommended the P5Q mobo from Asus for a new pc. I am a little confused however by the plethora of versions of this mobo when I look on pricespy. Can anyone make a more definitive rec based on my usage being mainly office work (MS Office, accounts etc) and then browsing, email and also using voice recog software to create large manuals/books. I would like to try some gaming but not at a serious level, and not streaming/live.

The system I am planning is.
CPU - Intel Core 2 E7400 2.8Ghz
4Gb DDR2 800 SDRam
into a Coolermaster 690 case with Antec 500w PSU
Seagate Barracuda 500Gb HDD
GPU is undecided but something ok but inexpensive (say <$200)
Dual bootable with XP Pro SP3 and Linux (Ubuntu 8.10)

751440 2009-02-26 04:12:00 Cheapest version (P5QL-PRO) should do just fine. It's a P43 chipset instead of P45, but it's really no big deal. qazwsxokmijn (102)
751441 2009-02-26 05:21:00 Yep P5QL-Pro is fine, but if you're looking to Overclock or get an extra GPU later on, get the P45 chipset ones, like the P5Q-SE(no crossfire) or the P5Q-Pro(crossfire)

For GFX, an ATI4670 or a 9600GT

751442 2009-02-26 07:10:00 I got the P5Q just that .. nothing else in the model. I regret it and wished I saved my $30 or such. Because I thought the eSATA bracket was a unique feature on the motherboard but in fact you could buy them for $8 cos they just attach to any SATA connector.

I don't overclock. I don't need any special features. Just as long as it works.

751444 2009-02-26 09:22:00 I wouldnt bother with what P5Q you get

The rest of them (P5Q, SE, SE Plus, SE /R, P5Q SE/2), only have 1 IDE.

So, if youre happy, with 1 IDE connection

Theyre basically all the same (1 IDE, 12 USB, max 16 GB, but the only 1 that has firewire, is the P5Q)

I'm using the P5Q SE/R here. Nothing wrong with it
