751358 2009-02-25 22:16:00 Does anyone have an ASUS eee PC or could make any comments/recommendations on them? I only need a laptop for basic computer stuff and am thinking of getting a netbook. ! I thought of ASUS because i know they were the first in the market, and heard they have awesome battery life. Any tips would be helpful!! JaneyB (14656)
751359 2009-02-25 22:38:00 I'd prob go for either the eee 901 or the eee 900, the 901 has excellent battery life, around 4-5 hrs, unsure about the 900

If you're only going to do simple stuff, a 900 or a 901 would prob be sufficient. Both are reasonable cheap, but the 901 is more powerful. Both have options for XP, and the XP versions come with a 12gb SSD. Should be enough, but if you run out of space, you could always add in another SDHC card.

Cheapest prices on 901 and 900

751360 2009-02-25 22:41:00 Chilling_Silence used to own 2 of them. They are awesome little machines. Even played Warcraft 3 and Age of Empires ^_^

If I didn't already have a Laptop I'd consider buying one.

751361 2009-02-25 22:47:00 I have a 900.

They are excellent machines. I recommend you get one :)

I have a few gripes about them - the keyboard is *tiny*, but usable - just takes time to get used to.

They also get quite hot, very quickly. This is because there is no conventional heatsink on them - they use the keyboard sheilding for this. The screen res (1024x600) is also quite small - using ClearType helps alot though.

751362 2009-02-25 23:33:00 Go over to DSE, have a look at the large range of netbooks, different brands, different sizes etc, and see which one you like.

And find which screen size suits you best, 7", 8.9" or 10"

751365 2009-02-26 03:16:00 I have an Eee 701, which only runs at 800x480 resolution, but is surprisingly usable, even with XP. If I had the money (mine cost $300 :p), I'd have gone for the 901. pcuser42 (130)
751366 2009-02-26 07:02:00 We just bought a 900 and my wife loves it, I have no opinion so far as I have yet to be allowed a turn. We like the SSD version, its totally transportable and adding some more disk space is pretty cheap, we have a 8gig flash drive that cost about $40.

We looked at the 1000 series but the extra money didn't seem worth it.

751367 2009-02-26 10:10:00 Yeah Im with Limepile, the extra $$ just isnt worth it for the 1000 series...

Highly recommend getting extra RAM to chuck in them (2GB total) as well, makes them fly!

Had a 700, sold it a little while ago for some quick cash, it was cool but the smaller screen was a little frustrating. That said it served me well at Uni for 6 months and during my time there I noticed another 3 people bought them, apparently after seeing mine :D
Have since given my fiance my 900 to take to Uni with her.

The 900 was great, the 901 would run a fair bit cooler I'd *presume* because its got a 1.6Ghz Atom (Or is it 1.3Ghz?) CPU instead of a 900Mhz Celeron. The screen size on the 900-series runs at 1024x600 which is very usable on such a device!

The 700 has slightly better placed speakers, makes a nice difference if you're watching a movie on your own.

The touchpad on the 900 is a little bigger too which is nice if you're using it a *lot* (And I was using my 700 for about 4-8 hours a day). Only problem with using such a little device, I really began to hunch over the screen quite a bit and because I used the 700 & 900 as my primary PC for about 10-12 months, it wasnt very good for my posture. In hindsight I should have hooked up an external monitor while using it at home etc.

Run your OS off the primary SSD if you get the 900, heaps faster than the 12 / 16GB Flashdrive!

Gaming also isnt too bad, Age of Conquerors, Warcraft, Day of Defeat, UnrealTournament etc as Lord_Noddy said :)

I had a play with HP's & Acers NetBooks recently. Both were nice, but Im definitely a fan of the 900s over any other model (Asus or not!) :)

The 900 has slightly lower battery life than the 700, around 3 hours instead of 3.5 (And yes, 3.5 IS attainable while browsing the web, Ive done it!)

However, if you get a 700 series, I'd highly recommend getting an 8GB SDHC card for around $50. The only thing is the EeePC's are semi-picky about SDHC cards (4GB+) so buy the brand it says in the User Manual and you'll be sweet ;)
Hope this mini-review has helped.
