751228 2009-02-25 10:06:00 My PC has USB 2.0 connectors, runs XP SP3, and has two HDs. I am trying to use a USB external drive as off-site back-up.
Problem 1. When I connect the external HD with its two USB leads it is seldom recognised by the system.
Problem 2. On the odd occasion that it is recognised attempts at copying files across usually results in an error message "Windows Write Failure" that terminates the process and 'hangs' the drive, which must be disconnected forthwith. On rare occasions the drive is recognised and files can be copied - no way of knowing when though. Very frustrating.
Any suggestions on overcoming the problem welcomed.

751229 2009-02-25 17:43:00 DO other USB devices work fine when plugged into these ports? Are they front case USB ports or rear ones if trying the front ones swap to the rear ones as they allow more power through the port. gary67 (56)
751230 2009-02-25 22:15:00 The drive may be on the way out-try using Unstoppable Copier to recover the data, then do a chkdsk on the drive. Run>cmd> chkdsk "Driveletter": /r /f

751231 2009-02-26 05:11:00 Thanks for your comments. It does not matter whether I use the front or the back ports - same result. Pen drives work fine. The HD works fine with my computer at work.
The message I get when it starts to copy then fails is;
Windows - Delayed Write Failed.
Windows was unable to save all the data for the file M:MyBackup.Tib. The data has been lost. The error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save the file elsewhere.

751232 2009-02-26 05:29:00 So have you tried unstoppable copier to recover the stuff?

And have you tried another cable?

751233 2009-02-26 06:40:00 Thanks Blam - I haven't tried unstoppable copier because I don't actually need to recover the corrupted file - it's a duplicate copy if you like, made to take it off site. The thing is that the copy process rarely completes so I end up with a corrupted file. I haven't tried another cable, but then I use the same cable when I connect the drive to my computer at work. Nevertheless I will borrow a cable and give it a try just in case. Thanks again. Scot Scot (14653)
751234 2009-02-27 04:37:00 I have spent some time testing the drive on another computer today and find that I get the same write error (previously thought it was OK), so now will buy another drive enclosure and leads or possibly another HD if that doesn't fix the problem. Thanks for your help Blam6. Scot (14653)
