751206 2009-02-25 01:44:00 Tried the new OS from PC World in my laptop for evaluation. Consensus, I liked it. Haven't looked at Vista but have heard nothing good about it. However after being sick of the number of my programmes that were not compatible with W7, I decided to chang back to my XP Pro. W7 had advised it could not be uninstalled but by reinstalling the older OS, it would re-write over it and replace it. That's when the problems started. XP adised it could not replace a newer OS. W7 seems to have not way of rebooting in DOS. Before I dig deeper, can anyone advise the best method of gettig rid of W7 without reformatting the C Drive? Sapperbro (6562)

Are you serious!? Since SP1 came out there has been *nothing* wrong with Vista. I would happily use it over XP any day.

Which programs don't work?? If they are old versions, try updating them :)

You will need to reformat your hard disk, or repartition it, to get XP back on.

751208 2009-02-25 02:19:00 Did you dual boot originally? Or install over XP?
If you did, then you can only reformat the drive and reinstall XP.

Next time, make an image of the XP drive. Or just dual boot

I use both XP and vista OK and W7 -- personally speaking XP is so "Plain and boring" now While W7 is faster than Vista - its not that different, considering W7 is built from Vista anyway, any programs that wont work on Vista wont work in W7 either.

751210 2009-02-25 02:40:00 To JWIL1, The only thing I heard about Vista was that it is Win 2000 on steroids. The cost of updating all the prommes when you update an OS can be horrendous, especially when one is on a pension. Will reformat but the laptop is an Acer with all the attendant operating files on the C drive. I'll muddle through but a recent stroke has played havoc with memory (mine) and some procedures have been lost to me. W7 doesn't have a DOS system apparently.

To blame6, I'll have to learn the dual boot procedure. Many thanks.

751211 2009-02-25 02:45:00 To wainuitech, I don't do too much in an operating system as it is only a medium to run Programmes. Refer my comment about the cost of updating programmes when the new OS won' accept them. My Vodem for the laptop won't connect to the web or ISP and Vodaphone hasn't even heard of W7. Just one instance. Sapperbro (6562)
751212 2009-02-25 02:56:00 So have you actually tried googling for updates to these programs? Anything that works on, or has "heard of" vista will, I guarantee you, work on Windows 7, and 90% of the programs out there will work with Windows Vista as well as XP.

Which programs do you have on your computer that don't work? we can help you find (probably free) updates :)

Just becuase a program doesn't know about a particular OS doesn't mean it won't work. MS Office 97, for example, is a full 10 years older than Win7 and it still works great on it!

751213 2009-02-25 03:04:00 I Know what you are saying about older programs not working with New OS's - I see this a lot in my own business, in fact I have actually set up several peoples PC's running both Win2000/XP & vista in a dual boot for that exact reason - some programs wont work on Vista, and either the person doesn't want to upgrade the program or its not available any more.

Regarding W7 - remember its still in Beta format - it has bugs and is unfinished, hence many places wont have made new drivers that work.

On the Microsoft site it does state that you cant roll back to a previous OS, OR upgrade to a newer version of W7 when its available, you have to remove it.

The best option if you want to try W7 is ether install on a separate HDD, or Dual Boot with the current OS you Have, that way later on you can remove W7 and leave the other.

751214 2009-02-25 19:12:00 Hello sapperbro, you will have to do a clean install of Windows XP or Vista, to recover your system after the Windows 7 Beta expires. To do this you will need an original XP installation disk or download of XP and a valid license for XP. For easy to follow instructions on installing Windows XP, from the Microsoft Help and Support page here: support.microsoft.com . If there is a specific question that you might have please let me know.

Gotta agree here. I used to be a Vista knocker but after SP1 the OS is brilliant. Only had a few compatability problems with older programs but only because I chose a 64 bit system ( so I could use lots of RAM for Photoshop etc).
