751154 2009-02-24 23:52:00 My computer takes such a long time to shut down. I have XP home edition.
It takes from 2 to 5 minutes for just the shutdown box to appear after going to Start, Turn off Computer, then another 5 minutes to actually shut down after the red button is pushed. I notice that if I do not use the internet, it does not take so long, but when I go online with Mozilla or Explorer it takes ages to shut down.
I have tried disabling several programs, including start up programs and my Zonealarm security suite, to see if this is the problem with no improvement at all. I have updated my bios, motherboard, video and sound card drivers to try to solve the problem.
Its just too weird.
The problem started after updating several software components, for programs so I do not know which one may have caused it.
Its not a major problem, but annoying and mysterious. I am just hoping someone may have a solution as I have scanned the internet for one with no luck.

751155 2009-02-25 00:13:00 How old the machine and how much RAM does it have?
Plenty of free space on the hard drive?

751156 2009-02-25 01:19:00 to fix slow shutdown. open regeditor (start.run, type regedit)
click HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop. select WaitToKillAppTimeout and set value to 1000. Select the HungAppTimeout value and set that to 1000 as well. Click HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop, set the WaitToKillAppTimeout to 1000 as well.Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro 1. Select the WaitToKillServiceTimeout value and set that to 1000. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop, highlight the value AutoEndTasks and change the value to 1 Close the regedit and restart pc
cheers

751157 2009-02-25 02:26:00 Anything lower than 5 for that is bad for your pc Karuma49. It can cause disk corruption and other pc problems.

751158 2009-02-27 04:47:00 Thanks guys, not sure about the registry edit, will try that as a last resort. I have 2 gig memory and three hard drives all with plenty of space.
Will put the log on as soon as I have time.

751160 2009-02-27 05:10:00 Hmmm. Speedy's the expert, but this one looks suspicious:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SlowDownCPU] C:\WINDOWS\INF\MSI\SlowDownCPU\SlowDownCPU.exe

751161 2009-02-27 05:41:00 Funny you say that-cause
SlowDownCPU.exe is a legit MSI application.

But, its unneeded, and its probably the culprit, so:

Boot into safe mode

Turn off system restore.
Right click my comp>properties>system restore tab>tick "turn off system restore on all drives"

In Windows Explorer, turn on "Show all files and folders, including hidden and system".
In folder options

Open your task manager, by holding down the ctrl and alt keys and pressing the delete key.

End the SlowDownCPU.exe process

Run HJT and tick this:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SlowDownCPU] C:\WINDOWS\INF\MSI\SlowDownCPU\SlowDownCPU.exe

Click on the fix checked button.

Restart in normal mode, and you should be good to go:thumbs:

751162 2009-02-27 05:58:00 Other unneeded HijackThis entries:

Also-make sure in IE>tools>options>connection>Lan settings>All boxes are unticked
Your Java is also out of date, uninstall all versions in add or remove then install latest version from java.com

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1;*.local

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"

If you don't use the language toolbar, you can tick these:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'LOCAL SERVICE')

751163 2009-02-27 05:58:00 I'd go for ccleaner:
www.filehippo.com
Download the latest version.
Run the cleaner and the registry cleaner and then pay particular attention to the startup tab of the "tools" menu. It allows you to disable an item that is set to start automatically. They can be re-enabled also.

Got to go or otherwise suspicious are winamp & google toolbars, google updater, adobe speed launch, java update and quickstart, SlowDownCPU.exe? . Google the item if unsure.
