564895 2007-07-02 08:47:00 He was on the news tonight. Quite modest ... "I was just doing my job"
Well done

I do wonder however how this attention will affect his S.A.S career (now that his identity is no longer secret).

564896 2007-07-02 09:04:00 Did anyone see the Inside NZ documentary series on the NZ SAS recently? It was fascinating. Very few pass the selection process and then the subsequent 9 month training program before even being considered for acceptance into the SAS. You could see why Corporal Apiata considered it "just part of the job". Jen (38)
564897 2007-07-02 10:59:00 Excellent!! I'm sure he thoroughly deserves it.

But I'm afraid it was tarnished a little for me when I discovered it was awarded by Helen, not the Queen. The Queen doesn't award these anymore. Not that I have any time for that old hag, but at least she is non-political. Whereas, right now, harridan Helen is after any good news she can exploit.

564899 2007-07-02 13:02:00 AS a Kiwi living in Australia I missed the news, but one can be sure it was hard earned and well deserved. I am impressed with reported remark " I was just doing my job"
When I was serving at RNZAF Woodbourne back in the sixties, I had the privilege of meeting Charles Upham at lunch, before he was the guest of honour at the Cadets passing out parade.
One of my colleagues asked a question about his actions that saw him awarded with the VC.
His answering remark was " I was not smart enough to stop and think"
This recipient seems to be blessed with the same self effacing modesty.

564900 2007-07-02 18:48:00 But I'm afraid it was tarnished a little for me when I discovered it was awarded by Helen, not the Queen. The report I heard said it was awarded by the reigning monarch, but signed off by our Prime Minister.

Having said that, I found it strange that a five minute search on BBC news turned up no mention of the award.

564901 2007-07-03 09:22:00 I say good on him and I'm sure he deserved it but I thought we weren't accepting English gongs anymore. mikebartnz (21)
564902 2007-07-03 10:14:00 Yes but by sleight of hand it isn't an English gong, it's "The VC for NZ is identical in design to, and made of the same Crimean War gunmetal as, the British VC." PaulD (232)
