564364 2007-06-29 12:37:00 Hi

I'm looking at picking up a car in the weekend at an excellent price, but the paint on the roof is oxidising. Considering I have a $500-800 budget to do this up, is it going to be a major issue?

Any estimates on how much it would cost to get the roof looking normal again? I want to check that it is economical to fix before I go and spend the money on the car.

564365 2007-06-29 19:46:00 Seeing the subject, before I read your post, I thought "It must be an Accord".

Honda Accords of about 1993ish had major problems with roof and bonnet paint. If the bonnet has not be repainted, you will have to do that eventually. Cost? It is best that you ask at a local car paint place - tell them its an Accord and they will smile. My guess is $300 - $400.

Cost me $37 for a tin of Solarguard.

Did you hire a paint sprayer or did you have your own? Use primer first? How hard/easy was it to do? My mate has an Accord that needs new paint on the roof and bonnet.

564368 2007-06-29 22:26:00 personally I wouldn't touch it, check the rubber strips going over the roof on each side as these places are prone to rust. You may not see it but it's there. Also along the windscreen and rear window.
Had a 93 accord, STAY AWAY from it. You have been warned

Solarguard is usually applied by brush, isn't it?

As for the oxidation, my old Primera had the same thing going on. Started in the roof, and then went to the bonnet as well. Also had started to affect other panels.

I didn't get around to repainting the affected areas (was on my long term plan list for the car) but was told allow approx $200-300 per panel for repainting (but that wasn't an official quote)

I would avoid it, and get a better car

564371 2007-06-30 00:30:00 Doesn't sound too good then, although $300 to paint it would be fine.

It's a 96 Accord.

564372 2007-06-30 00:58:00 I got some quotes from panelbeaters in the Yellow Pages, and it seems like $300+gst is about the average cost, although I suspect my panelbeater friend might be able to do it cheaper, considering he took out some dents for 1/5 the cost I was quoted elseware.

Do you guys still think I should stay away from it?

It's $2000 for a 1996 Accord with 175000kms from a guy I know, and that price includes a full service.

Oh yes it was.
We sanded the entire thing an very carefully painted it.
OK, it didn't quite have the gloss of a real paint job but it looked a million times better. Friends though I'd bought another car until they saw it close up.

As for real paint jobs, had the bonnet, lower sides and a piece at the back done on my Rover - it had stone chips, cost me $700.
