Price... Features... Quality... Whatever

I'm looking for one for uni work. Maybe watching a few DVD's, and light gaming.

Not sure what cpu it has. Core duo maybe?

563881 2007-06-28 04:37:00 The main thing i'd want to chack is the RAM. it's only got a gig, and with vista thats nothing. (especially since the gfx card doesn't have a lot of dedicated memory). it's like running XP on 256MB. it says 2 x512. I'd check there is still space to upgrade in the future. It's possible theyve filled up both the sots, although i'd hope not.

EDIT: Also look at warranty conditions.. 1 year 'limited' is not an extremely good warranty.

563882 2007-06-28 06:28:00 I purchased a very similar specd Toshiba from them a few weeks ago (bigger screen though). It came with 512mb ram and I was running Vista home premium with all the bells and whistles going no problem. I upgraded to 1.5gig of ram and it didn't make much difference at all so I don't know what the carry on about Vista needing so much ram is all about.

I'd say the HP would be a good 'all rounder' and at that price you won't get much better/cheaper.

Same.
I'd only ever buy a 3yr warranty model Toshiba or an ASUS.

HP is way down the bottom.............

563884 2007-06-28 08:28:00 Sorry, I forgot that I bought the Toshiba purely on pcteck's recommendation (no- I'm not kidding, if it's something that I can't tinker with I don't want it to break down!)

Surely you can get a Toshiba from DSE for around the price of the HP? I 'negotiated' with them when I got mine... the sales guy just had to grovel to the manager a few times :)

563885 2007-06-28 09:54:00 I bought a cople of PC's recently with Vista Home premium loaded. They had 1 GB of RAM as delivered.
I bought an extra 1 GB of RAM each, but was underwhelmed with the added performance.

The PC's ran fine and fast with 1 GB, no difference was really noted with 2 GB.

So I am also puzzled why everyone suggests 2 GB is "essential" for Home Premium.

As to laptops, I have had 5 over the years.
The only ones still going are the Toshiba ones, which account for 3 of the 5.
The last Toshiba (bought when the HP motherboard died) came from Noel Leemings, I negotiated a very good deal for the demo one. Good $$ off, more RAM and a bag tossed in, plus a 3 year warranty.

Not sure what cpu it has. Core duo maybe? So little information, if I were you I get as much info on that product if possible, because there's one time I've purchased a laptop with a desktop CPU so kinda regret it later because the battery life can't last long at all.
Watch out for the CPU.
I bet this CPU doesn't have Turbo memory in it. It didn't say Santa Rosa CPU either.

563888 2007-06-28 11:07:00 Yeah, whatever Turbo memory is, i'm not concerned about it. Or Santa Rosa.

1gb is fine guys.

My Dad has had pretty bad problems with his Toshiba, so a bit biased against them.

Found this Toshiba: www.dse.co.nz

Shortcircuit, what laptop did you buy?

I didn't realise I could ask DSE for upgrades. Can they upgrade much stuff, or only the ram?

563889 2007-06-28 11:30:00 This is a laptop, only the HDD and RAM are upgradeable. godfather (25)
