751378 2009-02-28 07:58:00 Yes-but it still thrashes it-and decreases its cycles significantly.

On the note of defragging, it's not necessary on SSDs due to the way they seek. But in terms of wear, caused by defragging, page files, swap files or whatever - yes it does reduce the lifespan, but do you really care if it reduces the lifespan down to about 2-3 years? Realistically, do you intend on keeping that device beyond that sort of time?

Take a look at this table:
wiki.eeeuser.com

Worst case scenario is continuously reading/writing to the disk, non stop (remembering that this is significantly worse than defragging your disk, having a page file etc), the life span is still 231 days.

751379 2009-02-28 09:30:00 But still, why would you do it? If it has no benefits? Blam (54)
751380 2009-02-28 09:47:00 Ah but thats not the point, the point is the FUD spread about the life of a SSD does nothing to help this new technology along ... Chilling_Silence (9)
751381 2009-02-28 10:15:00 Disabling the pagefile is good. End of story.
No defragging SSDs. Thats it.

751382 2009-02-28 19:29:00 He meant "ssd life" lol

I'm used to saying battery life :p

751383 2009-03-02 15:08:00 1. I doubt a few defrags will cause serious damage to SSDs. If they do, then the tech is fundamentally flawed; too fragile for prolonged use and not worthy of adoption. It's not safe to store data on such a device.

2. File fragmentation is not a concern for SSDs, because seek times are negligible...fragmented files can be read (for all practical purposes) nearly as fast as contiguous ones. However, heavy free space fragmentation can apparently decrease write performance if allowed to proliferate unchecked.

So, don't defrag SSDs often; it's not required, and it's good to keep the free space contiguous.

751384 2009-03-02 22:14:00 What does a SSD drive look like? how do they wear out?
Are they different to memory card I got in my fone?

751385 2009-03-02 22:31:00 Hard to describe what they look like....see for yourself:

en.wikipedia.org

SSDs have a limited number of read/write cycles, before if wears out.

751386 2009-03-02 22:34:00 Yeah I looked at that but I wondered how something with no moving parts wears out. prefect (6291)
751387 2009-03-02 22:42:00 Its the flash memory inside-the the flash cells wear out ofter 1000-10000 cycles Blam (54)
