564384 2007-06-30 09:56:00 Sounds like the general consensus is that I'm an idiot :(. You might all be right.....The way I read it, people are just giving you the benefit of their experience.
I recently bought a high KM (over 200,000) Toyota Corona. I think I bought it when a few things needed fixing (CV joint, suspension bushes). I wouldn't have bought a Mitsi or Honda with similar km's on the clock. Why? ... because I know from asking around and talking to mechanics that Toyotas and Nissans are fairly much bullet-proof.
My last car was a Primera, bought at 140,000, I owned it 6 years, I think in that time it cost me less than $1100 (muffler, radiator, 4 new tyres, few other things) in repairs. The only reason I parted with it was coz it was rear-ended and written off. But the engine and gearbox were bullet-proof (almost).

564385 2007-06-30 10:06:00 calling yourself an idiot is a bit harsh. A sucker for punishment would be a better term.
A question to ask yourself, why is your mate getting rid of the car?

He runs a dealership, and was planning on doing it up. He says it's not worth it doing all the panel work to get it dealership-worthy for him.

I've now come across this: www.trademe.co.nz

Do you think it would be a better choice?

Edit: I do appreciate all your advice everyone. If anyone has any suggestions on a better choice of car, with a budget of $3200 or less, please tell me. It can be anywhere in the North Island.

564387 2007-06-30 12:57:00 The camry is imported, they were never sold here in 2 l, only 2.2/2.4 and 3 l
That a BIG car for 2 litre, though the 2.2's and 3 litre ones were incredibly good and reliable.

Why do you want a family sized tank though, how many kids do you have?

Before you buy anything, read the Dog & Lemon guide.

No family. I just find my Civic annoyingly small and want a car with some room. Yes, it's imported. Is that something to avoid? All the cheap cars are imported :p

564389 2007-06-30 21:40:00 Ok, if you want something cheap (which will no doubt be imported), have a look round and see what cars are very common. If you find a car you like, ask at local wreckers about how easily you can get second hand parts for that model (you will need the engine model number). Also, if you're in the AA, talk to their mechanics

Again, for an older car (early 90's), I would highly recommend Toyota and Nissan

564390 2007-07-01 03:22:00 In a complete change of tactic I may buy this www.trademe.co.nz for $3600.

Thoughts?

If you're wondering why every car I look at seems to be an accord, they just seem to be the best car for me, and I like them. At 143000kms nobody can complain!

564391 2007-07-01 04:04:00 In my experience (be it shorter than most others on here...) I have to agree with the Toyota group (can't comment on Nissan) I have had a Mazda, a Ford and now a 98 Toyota Corolla GL (bellow 100,000 KMs :D) and that is the best one so far the others needed work often..., cheap to run (cheaper than a 2.2 Accord), reliable and nice to drive, I am even looking at a newer Corolla for my next car :D The_End_Of_Reality (334)
