Juries are meant to do it, students of philosophy learn to do it. Closed minds in law lead to the Arthur Alan Thomas verdict - an innocent man convicted. None of us, no matter how old, how well educated, how experienced, have all the answers on any topic, or know it all - preconceived conclusions are the consequence of closed minds. |

You seem to be saying that we should all be willing to entertain the possibility that religious dogma may be real, that God, the Devil and other forms of the supernatural might be true. The majority of us have already made the investigation and found religious belief to be no more than fantasy. You might as well say we should keep an open mind to the possibility that elephants can fly. The jury is in and the verdict has been returned that religious belief is a crock of sh!t. Lloyd Geering may have been controversial in his day but he still believes in God, so he shows himself to be only slightly less deluded than other religionists. |

| 563715 | 2007-07-17 06:31:00 | I find it hard to believe that as human beings or should I say intelligent life forms with a developed, educated brain can have such an infancy way of thinking by believing in anything other than evolution. It boggles the mind. |

| 563716 | 2007-07-17 06:39:00 | As adults we all know that Santa, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy & Unicorns don't exist. And we don’t have to prove that they don’t. Why is that? |

There is a genuine exploration of belief structures and nobody has tried to convert anybody else. I doubt I have ever written anything more provocative on PF1 than some of my posts on this topic, yet we carry on debating in good humour and without rancor. Congratulations guys, if we keep this up before too long we'll have the answer to the meaning of life, afterlife, religion, gnosticism, agnosticism, atheism, Colonel Sanders Secret Recipe, World Peace, Zimbabwe will be sorted, Iraq will be at peace, China will shun piracy of all types, the whales will be saved, George W Bush will get a brain transplant and win a third term by a landslide, global warming will be reversed, hunger will be abolished on a world scale, aids will go into spontaneous remission, it will be found that a carefully bent paperclip can change water into non-polluting petroleum products, the Pope will renounce catholicism, abolish guilt and sell the family jewels to fund education for the under-privileged masses of the world, Helen Clarke will get a facelift and her teeth fixed, Black Power will amalgamate with the Mongrel Mob and take up ballroom dancing, Americans will start speaking english and spelling it the same as the rest of the English speaking peoples, Buck Shelford will lead the All Blacks to Glory in the World Cup and the Aussie cricket team will go into an inexplicable 50 year decline in form, losing 927 test matches on the trot. Well, it could happen! :illogical Cheers Billy 8-{) :xmouth: |
