2009-02-25 21:19:00 | Hi there O Wise Ones SWMBO's lappie again - but not the old one that I've posted about previously. That one could not be started the other day and the school sent it in to be fixed (I personally thinks the HD went). She borrowed a loaner lappie - because she teaches TIM a lappie is essential. She can not, however, connect to our wireless system at home. The connection is there, but it says limited or no connectivity. Trying the repair function gives an almost immediate warning that it could not be done because xxxxx could not be loaded. (I can't remember precisely what it said). Ipconfig shows nothing, just a quick blank black pop-up. Pinging the last known IP (school) - no ping. All the settings are set to automatically acquire IP addresses. I searched PF1 for similar posts, and it would seem to me to be a Winsock problem that may be fixed with the one of the fixes. (I think it's called TLfix or something.) Lappie : got no idea how fast, XP but also on a school LAN, no idea of RAM. Do you guys think I'm on the right track? sarel

2009-02-25 21:36:00 | What level of encryption are you using? I have found some laptops will refuse to connect to a WPA2 secured network, but will work fine with WPA. | somebody (208) | |

2009-02-25 22:42:00 | Gee, I wouldnt be installing SP3 on a loner lappie!! I suspect the encryption level maybe the issue. When wireless fails with limited connection but claims connectivity, it is usually to do with authentication and encryption levels.

2009-02-25 23:20:00 | School lappie = I've got no control over SP3 installation or not. The techies at school don't like it if I fiddle around and install stuff - with the result that she only has the school AV and Malware proggies - Computer Associates. (I've been rapped on the knuckles too many times). Will try the encryption though. sarel

2009-02-25 23:26:00 | If it is a school laptop it might have an IP address setup in the wireless network properties. If you set it to obtain an IP automatically make sure you note the IP address so you can add it back in for school use.
