2009-02-24 04:26:00 | One time, I was trying to clean the CPU and use Arctic Silver cos my new Quad Core temp is down to under 30 . I mistakenly put the CPU in wrong way and turned it on . Got electric buring and now does nothing . I get a long beep upon power up, black screen . Thou when I pull video cable out I get a no connection, when it is connected I get no notification, but just a black blank screen . It is a Gigabyte all in one motherboard with builtin video . I have bought a used Athlon 754 CPU and still no go . Before was a Sempron . I have tried the PSU off my new computer - also no go . Where to now? And is it worth it sourcing a used 754 motherboard? Then what happens if that does not work either and I need new RAM too, hence DDR400 are very expensive comparative . Thanks .

2009-02-24 05:18:00 | You may consider buying an upgrade kit with Motherboard, CPU, on board video and sound and some RAM to go with it. RAM to suit. But then we do not know if the PSU really works. And I will not give you advice until I get more info. Not enough information for me to give you an opinion.

2009-02-24 05:37:00 | how did you put the CPU the wrong way round? I thought they only fit one way? | utopian201 (6245) | |
2009-02-24 05:51:00 | Dunno the cpu, the hsf latched on top of it . Maybe a off sight . Re: PSU dunno, I tried my PSU off the new PC and it did the same thing, but course that particular PSU and motherboard could be both fried technically and even the RAM .

2009-02-24 06:44:00 | i wouldnt think itd damage anything but the cpu? its the modo givin the power to the wrong parts of the cpu not the other way around. can you be sure the used athlon works?

2009-02-24 09:28:00 | I am not sure on the CPU to be exact if it works . But if I look at the big picture, maybe instead a used motherboard and the RAM, potentially together $70 + $100 (DDR400) that it is better for $250-300 where I can get past technology but new at the stores - AMD single/dual core and a cheap all in one motherboard and a 4GB RAM .

2009-02-24 09:33:00 | How did you put it in the wrong way? I thought it was impossible? | Infinity (6758) | |
2009-02-24 09:49:00 | As I said no idea how I put it incorrectly . I put the CPU on, maybe it was a off sight event that I didn't look at the arrows on the CPU . At the time it didn't occur to me that the CPU wasn't flat, so I put the OEM HSF on and strapped it on after a drop of Arctic Silver and then I got buring smell . Only when I took it off, someone said to me look at the arrows it is facing the wrong way . 90 degrees to the other direction .
