| 564527 | 2007-06-30 00:43:00 | Now I am NOT clairvoyant but I have watched every Americas cup race since they have been on TV and the moment I saw Team New Zealand first hoist their spinnaker/gennaker I muttered to myself "OH NO That is going to rip - why did they go for that design" I was right - and I know nothing about sail design. So why was I so sure the sail would rip. BECAUSE IT WAS IN COLOUR. Anybody else noticed that coloured sails in the Americas Cup Regatta seem to rip a great deal more than white ones do? I wonder why colour should affect the sails. Perhaps the dyes weaken the material and also they will get hotter during use, which I think is the more likely reason. Or am I utterly and completely wrong? Tom |

So I guess just the minimalist difference in sail strength (weaker sails due to dying or inking) could be valid? I was watching the match with my brother, and we both were thinking a sail is going to rip today. A few seconds later the wrong sail broke! :( |

I still reckon a white sail would have been safer. Tom |

Tom I have just been watching Dalts during the press conference, who said that they had a hole just above the left hand tack the size of a 20c which blew out as a they hit a wave as they were in the process of changing genakers so I don't think colour comes into it. |

Thomas could probably speculate that IF the genoka had been white instead of red, it wouldn't have developed the 20c sized hole. |

There is also a sail called a genoa which your mispelling could of been confused with. Trevor :) |
