564527 2007-06-30 00:43:00 Now I am NOT clairvoyant but I have watched every Americas cup race since they have been on TV and the moment I saw Team New Zealand first hoist their spinnaker/gennaker I muttered to myself "OH NO That is going to rip - why did they go for that design"

I was right - and I know nothing about sail design. So why was I so sure the sail would rip. BECAUSE IT WAS IN COLOUR.
Anybody else noticed that coloured sails in the Americas Cup Regatta seem to rip a great deal more than white ones do?

I wonder why colour should affect the sails. Perhaps the dyes weaken the material and also they will get hotter during use, which I think is the more likely reason.
Or am I utterly and completely wrong?

564528 2007-06-30 01:13:00 The other reason the genaker blew out was probably because it
A had a hole in it
B was too big for the wind strength and therefore needed changing or
C Some other reason

564529 2007-06-30 02:40:00 I think thomas might have a point. In the america's cup they try to get as much advantage as they can, pushing the boundaries. So I guess just the minimalist difference in sail strength (weaker sails due to dying or inking) could be valid?

I was watching the match with my brother, and we both were thinking a sail is going to rip today. A few seconds later the wrong sail broke! :(

Genaker design limits would have been in "other" :)

But the hole appeared over a month after I said the sail would fail.
I still reckon a white sail would have been safer.

I have just been watching Dalts during the press conference, who said that they had a hole just above the left hand tack the size of a 20c which blew out as a they hit a wave as they were in the process of changing genakers so I don't think colour comes into it.

_in_this_particular_situation_ maybe not, but I don't think you can rule out the dye process because of this. Thomas could probably speculate that IF the genoka had been white instead of red, it wouldn't have developed the 20c sized hole.

You meant geneker. There is also a sail called a genoa which your mispelling could of been confused with.

564535 2007-06-30 10:31:00 But why does this always happen to ETNZ. 2003 and now? I mean don't they have enough money to afford the proper kit. beeswax34 (63)
