752476 2009-03-01 04:02:00 I have just had a complete reinstall of Windows XP media edition done, not by myself but by someone I paid. Now that it's back I have no sound, yet my computer tells me the sound thingies are all working properly. This happened the last time I reinstalled windows, but some sort of automatic updates suddenly restored it. I've tried troubleshooting, but whatever it tells you to open test isn't necessarily corresponding to the headings on my computer. Is there a simple way to test what is going on? I stress simple, because otherwise I'll have to take it back and wait another three weeks for those clowns to look at it again. Guerilla Surgeon (6848)
752477 2009-03-01 04:11:00 Have you installed the sound drivers yet?

And is the windows audio service on auto?

In where? Device Manager?

Are the speakers plugged into the correct port in back of the PC?
Are they on?

Is Sound muted - check sound icon in taskbay tray.

Are drivers OK? _ Device Manager?

You could ring the person who reinstalled if you have everything plugged in right.

752479 2009-03-01 04:29:00 three weeks for those clowns to look at it again Sounds ( no pun intended) more like COWBOYS - blimey - they should have checked that every thing was working BEFORE it was returned. AND 3 weeks ??

As long as every thing is in the right locations plug wise and nothing is muted it should work - obvious statement I know.

752480 2009-03-02 03:42:00 Installed drivers? Wouldn't they already be installed? If not how would I do it? As far as I can see everything is plugged in properly at least according to the colour codes on the various cables and so on. As far as cowboys go, they do repair work for a large chain store. So wasn't necessarily their fault it took three weeks, they claim it was the shop that failed to reply to their faxes etc etc. Who on earth do I believe, I've already spent money on someone who managed to misdiagnose the problem, so I basically paid for this twice. As I said when I reinstalled it myself, which took hours of phone calls to Microsoft, because although I had a legitimate disc the computer wouldn't accept the code number, the sound was off too, it just came on after an automatic update -- strange. But I tried updating and it doesn't work. If I need to download drivers and install them, how do I find out what sort of sound card I've got? Guerilla Surgeon (6848)
752481 2009-03-02 03:53:00 No, unless its an OEM / dell / HP / restore cd / whatever, it wont install drivers

You have to go to the maker's site, (if you made it up, go to the mobo maker's site) download them then install them

I wouldnt use windowsupdate for drivers they'll kill it completely

752483 2009-03-07 19:58:00 Ok so no ? (except for scanning.) so that's ok, have downloaded & updated all I can. Can get sound on earphones but not from screen speakers which were perfect when the case got sent away. I swear it's all connected properly. I dunno! Guerilla Surgeon (6848)
752484 2009-03-07 20:40:00 When you say screen speaker I assume you mean speakers built into the monitor ?

If so make sure the lead that goes from the green speaker outlet on the PC (normally) goes to the in jack on the monitor.
Might sound silly - but do the speakers on the monitor have an on/off button, seen it happen the speakers are turned off hence no audio.

Another test , You say the earphones are working ?? where are these connected into ?

Remove the lead that goes into the green outlet - plug in the head phones - do you get audio through them?

If so plug back in the same green outlet the normal speakers - leave the headphones disconnected - many times if headphones are plugged in they will cut the normal speakers - thats so the person who has the head phones can hear music etc, while every one else cant.

752485 2009-03-09 21:37:00 Thanks! The cable that came with the screen was not green. So in my ignorance and the impossibility of seeing behind the case it wasn't plugged in the correct port. So I'm fixed if a trifle embarrassed. Ta!!!! Guerilla Surgeon (6848)
