752349 2009-02-28 23:48:00 I'd been having problem with the extra ordinary consumption of my bandwith ,and it seems that one of the users here in our home is inconsiderately downloading huge files such as movies and uploading files to youtube.

I have tried OpenDNS configured to my router (Belkin MIMO ) but can only block very few sites. Sites like LImewire , Youtube , Piratebay & other filesharing sites are still available to my home network.

Could someone please share something useful to effectively configure my existing router to block these file sharing sites ?

Thanks in advance..

752350 2009-02-28 23:59:00 Welcome to PF1 - what OS's or are you using wainuitech (129)
752351 2009-03-01 00:02:00 Have you tried going into the open dns dashboard, then ticking "P2P sharing sites" for filtering? Blam (54)
752352 2009-03-01 00:05:00 Thanks for welcoming me here.. I'm using Vista home premium .I've got other two computers connected to the same network ( Wireless )through a belkin router. The other pc is in XP pro and the other one is using an apple mac laptop which I'm not so sure if the os is a mac osx .

Thankyou

752353 2009-03-01 00:06:00 On the router-you can try blocking all needed ports, that should stop the p2p Blam (54)
752354 2009-03-01 00:15:00 Just adding to Blams information - if you go into the router setting and allow only the following ports to be open:

80 (Web Traffic)
443 (Secure Web Traffic)
110 (POP3)
25 (SMTP)

That will allow only those ports, and as you can see they are most commonly used ports/ proticals.

OR

Since you use Vista - you can always try the Parental Controls - This site here (www.bleepingcomputer.com) gives an extensive list / instructions on how to block certain sites, activities etc. - its LONG but well worth looking at.

have a look at the page - up top in the contents go straight to Number 6 - tells you how to block certain programs and certain sites Eg: You tube.

But that wouldn't work if the user was tech savvy-as it doesn't block ports, so they could still use something like bitlet etc?

It would be a good option if the user is doesn't know much about computers tho

752356 2009-03-01 00:22:00 Yes I did ticked the P2P in the openDNS dashboard and save the changes that I made. I also configured my router to blocked ports like for example limewire but they have the capability to use other open ports such as port 80 for HTTP . A317540 (14663)
752357 2009-03-01 01:05:00 You have three options:

1)Block Limewire/P2P apps on all machines using parental controls or programs such as TerminatorX

2)Block LimeWire With Packet-Filtering FW1 or router
IIRC Limewire uses ports 6346-6347 for both tcp/udp
Block ports you dnt want:bandwidthcontroller.com

3)Tell whoevers doing it to stop!!

It would be a good option if the user is doesn't know much about computers tho Easyyyyyyyyyyyyyy - if you have parental controls, then the Main user ( mum or Dad) have full admin rights, which is password protected - the kids or other users have limited accounts with parental control active - the " Limited" accounts cant change anything unless the password is known, and to do that they then need to log into the Admin account, change their own account(s) Then the restrictions can be lifted.

The average home user doesn't know how to bypass the security - and if any one asks how alarm bells should be obvious.
I've had jobs where I have been and the kids ask to change something - if its got security on the user Login - I ask the parents first- its amazing what some kids will try to " con you " into doing.

Security on some OS's is slack, even XP fully password protected - any one knowing what they are doing can bypass it with in a few minutes, - I have to do it all the time.
Limewire uses ports 6346-6347 for both tcp/udp You can change limewires ports to almost any port you want - seen it done a few times - a blank block of the program would work better.
