566112 2007-07-05 11:21:00 If I had an iPod that is connected to a universal dock, but the dock isn't connected to the USB cable (eg it is running off the iPods battery). If I was to also have an apple IR remote, will the remote be able to work the ipod and dock? Or does the universal dock need to be powered by the USB cable for the IR remote control to work?

Anyone know the answer to this?

TIA

566113 2007-07-05 11:34:00 Are you referring to the Front Row remote? If you are the Front Row remote only works with Front Row on the Mac. I think the 3rd party IR only works from the iPod if that is what you are referring to? The iPod has to be connected via USB to your computer to work remotely (if I understand you correctly:confused:) winmacguy (3367)

Hi winmacguy

I was referring to this remote (which supposedly works with the ipod):

tinyurl.com

And this dock:

Basically what I am asking is does the dock need to be powered by the USB cable to work, or will the power from the ipod be enough.
eg. If I want to setup the dock and ipod with my stereo system, by just having an a/v cable between the dock and the stereo, but not having the dock powered by anything apart from the ipods battery.

Just plug your iPod direct into your stereo via a/v cable and it will be fine. I do that with mine on my wife's stereo when we have friends over. The other thing you can does is to stream the music from iTunes on your computer via Apple airport to your stereo. The dock is only required if you want to have the iPod standing up on your desk top for charging and updating. As long as your iPod is connected via USB to your computer it will be charged and updated (when relevant)- the dock part is not always required.

Thats what I do too at the moment, but was wanting to control it with a remote from across the room. My local warehouse is selling off the docks and remotes at the moment, so was trying to figure out if the remote would work with an unpowered dock, but the warehouse staff weren't able to tell me.

According to the info it says that the remote controls the iPod, so i guess it must do that. I have the Front Row remote myself which works with my iMac rather than my iPod. (both remotes look the same)
I was just looking more closely at the picture of the dock and it does appear to have an IR receiver on it (the little black circle) so I guess you plug the iPod into the dock into your stereo.
