Just finished working on updating a website i made a few years ago for my mum's salon and i was wondering if you could take a look at the new layout/site etc and give me some constructive criticism on it.
Thanks a Bunch,
Tyrone

565381 2007-07-03 07:06:00 Your kerning between "hair" and "makeup" needs adjusting. The logo looks good. You need more line breaks as your lines are too long although your paragraph sets and font selection look good and are easy to read. looks like you have used the Trebuchet font. winmacguy (3367)
565382 2007-07-03 07:15:00 Looks nice. I do prefer the grey/black look over your previous predominantly black theme. :)

A couple of things:

Home page:
The home page has the photos taking up the large portion of the screen that is immediately viewable. The text is nearly out of sight and you need to scroll down to read it. The text is important, as it tells the visitor what the site is about. How about moving the photo on the second row (the three girls) elsewhere on the page?
The home page also has some paragraphs indented, and the rest are not.

The Decor page:
The section on the framing styles needs a little framing work of its own. The text body lines are not aligned and the image placement doesn't look right either.

Weblinks - various pages:
On some pages, for example the "Wedding Gallery (Click to View)" is underlined with blue, but on other pages the same formatting "Portrait (Click to View)" is not underlined at all.

All in all, I think you have made a nice job. Simple and clean which gives a professional look. :)

I agree with this, you wasting prime real estate with those images either push them below the text or consider giving them their own page. The first thing a visitor sees on the site should hook them it and encourage them not to leave, consider a welcoming message and simple outline of the site.

Consider centering the logo it just feels weird off to the left. Everything feels very large, I understand a lot of web designer try to design a page that is easy to read but in my opinion it just looks rude id use a smaller font.

The logo also doesn't seem very sharp, have you got access to some decent image editing software? Try adding some anti-aliasing and use a decent image format such as PNG, its well supported on the internet and offers better quality when compared to JPEG.

The menu/navigation on the left seems a lil bit overwhelming is there anyway to reduce the number of options?

Are you using style sheets? They are a good way to ensure all the pages have the same formatting etc :)

565384 2007-07-03 08:21:00 Firstly, it's all very well stating that the website is best viewed on Internet Explorer 7™ for Windows XP SP2 and Vista or Firefox 2™ for Windows XP SP1 and below and Linux or Safari on Apple OS-X but that is not good enough . There are lots of Internet Explorer 6, Firefox 1 . x and Opera users out there that you need to cater for .

Have you even looked at your website with the browsers I listed? You will find that your webpages look very different in each . For instance the text size in IE is smaller than FF 1 . 5 and Opera 9 . 2 which alters the entire look and feel of the site . The text size is not consistent either . It is smaller in Opera and FF on the Pamper Package page than it is on the other pages .

The second image at the top of the Home Page does not line up with the others .

I would recommend removing the second and third row of images in order to move your introductory text up the page . It is not good to have to scroll down the page to view it .

Your paragraphs indenting is not consistent . Indent every first line or none at all .

The paragraphs would look better with wider margins so that the text is not so close to the edges of the page .

The text should wrap or flow alongside your mother's pic on the Home Page and other similar images, not leave the pic stranded by itself on a line .

Lots of spelling and punctuation errors .

Lots of inconsistency with the use of upper case letters .

Use of upper case letters where they should be lower case .

Links should have more emphasis on them, eg on Hair page Sebastian, Vita-5, etc could be in bold . This will avoid the need to have "(Click on name to visit website)" as it will be obvious that it is a link . It is tacky to tell people where they need to click .

The Portrait Photography page doesn't look the same in IE 6 as in Opera and FF . The top of the page is same colour as sidebar . Check your code and check all the other pages as well .

You really need to ensure ALL pages view the same in as many different browsers as possible, including older versions that are 3-4 years old .

That's all I have time for right now but there's plenty of other things that could be improved on . Fix those issues and it will be a cracker site .

Well it was the first thing I saw and I was busy admiring the pics and not looking for text.

Maybe cut the text down to a basic minimum blurb just under and put all the rest of the burble on another page.
Cause something offering photography and stuff seems to me to be ideal having pics as the first thing you see.
But I don't like the one of the woman on the left. She looks ****ty.
The baby feet are good.

565386 2007-07-03 18:38:00 As a casual browser, the first thing I noticed were the pictures. Quite good, but not outstanding. I'rd lost interest before I reached the last one.

I'm still not sure if you are advertisihng a beauty parlour or a photographic business , or both.

The banner was not very welcoming. Put some colour in it.

I'm male and too old to need or want your service. So liven it up a bit and make me want it.

And why do people keep pushing Firewood and unix browsers. It might upset your hobby horse, but 99% (my calculation) of users still use IE.

565387 2007-07-03 21:25:00 Pics are far too big and in the wrong place.

You need to get your information out before the bottom of the screen. You also need your text as high to the top of the code as possible.

Swap the text and pics around, make the pics smaller and all the smae size in a bottom line.

The title pic needs work, got jagged edges, needs antialias on (off? I forget)

The site needs a third color, just B&W makes it too severe.

Need metatags

Title tag should be the keywords of the page

No <H1>!!! very important

I would use a litebox or ajaz script to hold your images so they can scroll and enlarge at the bottom of the page
