565075 2007-07-04 05:26:00 They bought it round. It had a Smitfraud variant among the usual spywares.

It has one system error which is fixable with the ME CD. Not a major one, it boots into Windows in normal mode OK.

They were told to fix that would cost $500.

They were also told that as they are thinking of going onto satellite broadband they would need WinXP and a network card as it has no onboard NIC.
That would be another $500.

Or they could buy a new PC.

All it needs is a NIC - $15 at DSE last time I looked. It does not need nor could it run XP. Not well anyway.

They bought the thing from CW in the first place for $4747. $3073 of which was the PC itself.
and your fee was?

565080 2007-07-04 11:33:00 For such an old PC everyone will recommend changing into a new system, it's no a surprise, because most computer people think differently.
i.e. I got a Pentium I computer, and it needs repair what will the computer repair person think? Well, first parts are getting hard to get, second the PC is real weak, and software compatiblities is very hard to match up, so third party diagnostic tools are pretty hard to run on those systems. So why not ask that person change the whole system and make things easier?

Users think: Man, getting a new PC is not worth it, what's the point, it is wasting my $$$, and do they know about security? NO. If the PC is five years old, it is still easier to get part rather than extreme old system. And I mean if you're running an AV scanner it'll takes ages.

565081 2007-07-04 20:11:00 I'm actually with pctek on this .... why throw a perfectly good computer just coz it has a virus and Win 9x? Consumerism at its best.

I live in a lower socio-economic area and most people here still have win 9x installed. Some can't afford to upgrade, those who can don't want to. If they have a virus, I clean it, If they need a new install, I give them a new install (of 9x). With updates (before MS announced they were dropping support of 9x, I manually downloaded as many upates as I could lay my hands on. The unofficial 98SE SP2 I got from here. I also have IE6 setup on the same disc). Therefore I have most 98 updates on disc :)

Incidentally, it seems a lot of people here (when fixing others computers), seem to sit in front of the screen and watch all the updates. Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but if you are, you need to learn to multi-task. Its more productive :)

Most people use the same old system because they're using the old software and never upgrades. Oh god, I can't even stand it using a single core anymore for compressing/decompressing. I wanna play the new games too, that's forcing me to get a new system.

Yes, many NZealanders like throwing out a malfunctioning PC because of little problem in it.

What, I should have charged $500?

I charge for what I do. I was not at their place, they bought it here.
Therefore I am not charging for time while things scan or install or whatever. I am off doing something else during that.

If they want me to do this sort of thing at their place then yes, I would charge for the time I am there.

Update of anti-malware, repair of system file. Install NIC purchased by them.
Didn't take me long at all.

Didn't take me long at all.Man, you're damaging the market, try charging higher. Think of others as well, I might want a part time PC repair job as my hobby, but now I have to relook at uni courses available.
