I tried reinstalling my cooler, and previously it had been 38C, now 35C (in BIOS PC Health menu). Would this be a significant difference?

I looked in the BIOS and I could find an adjustment for DRAM Frequency. (The options were 667, 800, or Auto) . I chose 800, but should I choose Auto or what? I also found some settings relating to Latency timings. Would this also affect overclocking?


Btw, when I was reinstalling my cooler, I noticed that most of the cooling substance was stuck onto the cooler, and only hints of it were on the CPU. Could this be a reason? I also have Cooler Master Thermal Cooling at hand, if I need to replace the thermal paste.

752124 2009-02-28 20:01:00 From MY experience there were two things that held me back when I still had my Pentium D CPU at 3GHz stock - the chipset and the RAM. I had it coupled with a 945 chipset and a 533MHz RAM and of course I couldn't get far from those two and could only get 3.2GHz most stable overclock. Since I upgraded to a P35 and 800MHz RAM I got it up to 3.8GHz easy.

I suspect it's you RAM - is it 800MHz at stock? When you raise your FSB frequency the RAM frequency will raise as well unless you choose a higher ratio by selecting it. So when you raie your FSB, also make sure that the RAM frequency is at or below 800.

DRAM frequency = 483.8Mhz
FSB : DRAM = 1:2
Cas Latency =5 clocks
Ras to CAS latency = 5 clocks
Ras precharge = 5 clock
Cycle time = 18 clocks

Command Rate = 2T


Not only that, PC2-6400 is DDR2 -800 right? But mine says: "Max Bandwith = PC2-6400 (400Mhz)???

See, when you overclock the CPU (by raising the FSB) the RAM frequency increases along with it. Auto setting just means that - it automatically increases the RAM frequency. I suggest you choose a lower option, below 800 to keep the RAM stable.

And yes PC2-6400 is DDR2 800. DDR2 stands for Double Data Rate, so that's 400x2 = 800.

752127 2009-02-28 22:47:00 I have switched my DRAM frequency down to 667. And I could overclock my computer to 260 *8 = 2080Ghz from 1938GHz.Howver, abovethat, the computer didn't even display POST, so I had to reset it.

After reseting it, I logged into Vista and saw that the CPU frequency was fluctuating between 2080Ghz and 1558Ghz, i.e. the multiplier keeps changing. I had come across this ocassion before, but I forgot the settings to keep it on 2080Ghz. I have already disabled C1E in the bios.

My other settings are:
1) Hardware Prefetcher
2) Adjacent Cache Prefetch
3) Max CPU ID value Limit
4) CPU TM
5) Execute- Disable Bit capability
6) PECI

752128 2009-02-28 23:06:00 what your seeing in vista is the cpu clocking back when its not being used, its a power saving thing.

also temp isnt everything, sometimes you get unlucky with hardware that just wont overclock

752129 2009-03-02 04:19:00 I had my cpu overclocked to 2.12GHz, but any Bus speed above that (265), the system won't even post and I have to reset the Bios.

In what direction can I go to overclock my cpu even further? Is it by changing the multipier ratio, or vcore or something, and how do you do that?
I hear that they can overclock to 3.2GHz!

I am using Palit II-G31 motherboard, which has no options for changing Vcore, except for the Bus speed (now at 265, multiplier of 8), DRAM Voltage (Auto with 1.80V, 1.85V ,...), and DRAM speed (667, 800, or Auto)


What should I do?
I really want to do that overclock further

752130 2009-03-02 04:28:00 I've also heard that increasing the vcore will make it possible for higher FSBs, so are there any programs which can do this properly?

I've tried CrystalCPUID, and it doesn't seem to work on voltages. It says that the "max" voltage is 1.30V and I can't get over that. Anyway, if I set one specific voltage, the voltage in CPU-Z is always lower, and changes back to the previous one every so often.

How would I find a program which can actually change vcore?

Currrently, my FSB : DRAM ratio is 3:5. How would I change it to 1:1 so I can overclock more easily or something?

752131 2009-03-02 23:09:00 vCPU voltage cannot be adjusted manual on every motherboard, I would suggest this is a limitation of your budget board. When you see the vCPU in CPU-Z is lower, this is called vDroop, meaning your motherboard voltage drops under load, usually due to poor capacitors or power management or power phase on the board.
