566128 2007-07-29 07:59:00 The boss at work was talking to a TV technician and he said that a Good analogue signal will produce a better picture than Freeview or Sky because of the high compression they use when they broadcast it.

Although resolution claims aside I would have to agree, as I install flat panel screens in customer’s homes and sky doesn't look that great on them or Freeview for that matter.

Not only is there loss due to compression but quality is also lost because of the deinterlacing.
Although this affects different panels separately.

High Def broadcasting it is not.

566129 2007-07-29 08:03:00 I'd have to agree that it's not as smooth as an analogue signal.

When you get large areas of colour graduation there are uneven 'steps', a bit like running an LCD monitor at too low a resolution.

In that respect I thought the Freeview TV ads were a bit misleading, something like 'high quality digital TV'.

Quite right, we get heaps of customers wanting a crystal clear, high resolution digital quality Freeview STB Some customers have been disappointed with their freeview, they say, "But the Ad says crystal clear high quality digital TV etc...?".

My response: "Well they lied. it's not high quality, it arn't crystal clear, and it's not truly digital because the STB converts it back to an analogue signal”

It really is misleading.

566131 2007-07-29 09:00:00 Well I have just got a DVB-S PCI card for my MediaPortal PC and I would have to say that the Freeview picture is awesome.
Switching between analog and freeview you can really see the difference (on my old 41" rear projection telly anyway)
The main advantage I see with the freeview setup is that TV3 & C4 are broadcast in widescreen. And maybe TVNZ???
I hope the Rugby World Cup is gonna be in widescreen!!!!
It also picks up the electronic program guide so recording something is a piece of p.... - Can't do that with the STBs yet!

But isn't that because your customer has only an analogue TV ?

If he had a proper digital TV - it would be awesome etc ?

Old Rear pro,

I surprised anything looks good on one of those . :)

True but because all programmes are not vet avaliable in 16:9 TV3 broadcasts Black curtains on the sides of it's 4:3 shows .
And customers tend to hate this so we have had to change their SKy/freeview to center cut .
C4 also suffers in a similar way, but with a black border right around some of its programmes .
It will be good when they make the full switch .

And maybe TVNZ???

TV One and TV2 will be in widescreen from Saturday 22 September at midday .

I've had the rear pro tv for about 7-8 years now and the picture still looks as good as the day I bought it .
It has a better picture than all the other rear pros I've seen .

to add . . . . . . .

rear pro tv's where never had an extremly good picture . but that brings up a good point . what one person calls good quality is another person poor quaility . lets face it most average joe's wouldn't know what good TV picture was if it bit them ;) FreeVeiw has proberly taken that into account, they kept the bandwidth down simply because a lot of people can't tell the difference . mind you i don't have it so i'm guessing on how bad it is .

CYaBro what Sat dish do you use for it? Details please if its not a sky dish.

566137 2007-07-29 23:41:00 It's just an old Sky dish. Didn't have to do anything to it to get it to work.

I don't think the bandwidth is that small.
About half an hour recording with MediaPortal & the DVB-s card ends up with a file size of about 1.8GB. You don't set the bitrate with the DVB-S card.

When I record with the analog TV Tuner I get about 2.2GB for an hour and that's with the bitrate set at an average of 4000kbps with a max of 8000.
