565969 2007-07-05 05:25:00 Was thinking of getting a 12v jump starter.
The one in question is 900amp and costs $80.

Opinions on these would be much appreciated.

Car was found with flat battery, due to light left on,would have done the trick.

Probably won't work too well on your (t)rusty old Lada, it would take too long to start. The 900 amps will only be available for a few seconds.

565972 2007-07-05 06:07:00 Would it work on one of those girls cars(MX5),if so it will work on my Nissan Primera.

Zqwerty,that is G-f's attempt at humour,painful I know.

565973 2007-07-05 06:13:00 afaik they only work if the battery is low not completly flat.

however someone did tell me you can leave it connected for a while and it will charge the battery up to a point where it can work (assuming the jump starter battery hasn't run flat).

$80 sounds awfully cheap for a 900amp one.

Thanks Tweak, wondered if they worked, seem like a good idea, but in my case battery was flat due to lights left on . much gnashing of teeth if I had bought one .

900 amp$80

565975 2007-07-05 06:34:00 $80...cheap insurance. also those "lights left on" alarms are handy ;) tweak'e (69)

Oh dear - poor old Lada.
I bought one umpteen years ago because I lived on the beach at New Brighton and the Toyota was rusting like mad. A lot of other people in the same area did the same. The Lada did rust of course but nothing like the Toyota did - and was a great deal more solid. It was and remains the easiest car to start that I have ever owned. Especially in really cold weather. And it would run on the cheapest petrol available. I sold it to my daughter for $20 and it is still running every day with little problem.
The Toyota I run now (miles from the salt air) is lovely in comparison, but the Lada was a cheap vehicle and did its job well.
Be kind to it.

565978 2007-07-05 06:47:00 I have used one on my old subaru with dead battery (sulphated)that had been sitting for a few months . Took a few minutes but finally it started . I do agree they are designed for times when the car just need a few cranks to get going like when lights left on . Although, if you have a fairly newish battery and this happens - if time allows, just turn the lights off and go for a walk or wait about 15 - 20min . The battery sometimes recover enough to get it going .

Oh and as for Lada's
What's the difference between a Lada and a sheep?
It's less embarrasing being seen climbing out the back of a sheep .
