753421 2009-03-04 11:32:00 This month's PC World has a great letter - which won letter of the month - about a Vista overheating problem which apparently had something to do with the task bar.

The letter chats away interestingly about all this - wins the prize but no one tells us the bug or the fix. I suspect I have the same heating issue and CPU consumption, slowness etc...

Does anyone know what the problem was and the fix???

753422 2009-03-04 11:42:00 Try using it for shorter periods, to give it time to cool down. Rob99 (151)
753423 2009-03-04 13:46:00 Hmmm...

Normally expect better advice than that from the Jedi master.

(Or perhaps I misunderstood, and it really was a pearl of wisdom..?)

I thought the same, ok, so after all the long preamble what's the solution ?

The taskbar causing Vista to overheat :waughh: makes no sense.

This may help us (pressf1.co.nz)

753426 2009-03-04 21:17:00 It was the taskbar using 50%+ CPU usage constantly

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to get the Windows Task Manager
Click the Processes tab
Click on the "CPU" heading to sort by CPU Usage, and then click on it once more after a brief delay to sort by highest usage at the top

If you see something other than "System idle process" using more than 20%, note down what it is and post back here. It may be the Sidebar or something constantly using your CPU and causing it to run hot, essentially overheating it if its in a poorly ventilated area.

753427 2009-03-04 22:00:00 If you're CPU is overheating because a process is using 50% CPU then the cooling setup your PC sucks, frankly.

I often have my PC running overnight rendering videos or whatever else, one example - middle of summer, 2 hour video, 720p resolution, both processor cores running between 90% and 100% usage for over 6 hours. Case temps got to 45deg, CPU was 43deg, grpahics card 75deg.

If its a brand name PC under warranty, take it back. If its a white box PC, then blow dust out of the case, tidy up the cabling and clean the CPU and heatsink, put on some new thermal pate.

And pop in a case fan or two, or an aftermarket CPU cooler.

753428 2009-03-04 22:06:00 Yup but some laptops if they're in an enclosed space ... ;) Chilling_Silence (9)
753429 2009-03-04 22:45:00 Laptops - true. wratterus (105)
753430 2009-03-04 23:58:00 Notwithstanding any of the above, it doesn't explain how a letter that didn't say what the problem was with the task bar (if any), and didn't say how the problem (if it was a problem) came to be fixed, won a prize?? Terry Porritt (14)
