753165 2009-03-04 01:37:00 Hey i have just given my brother an old iMac Lampshade and want to connect him up to the network but not the internet, how would I do this?
The computer is in his room plugged into a walljack that has cat5e on it then it goes down to a unpowered patch panel that is also our phone line then goes up to my room into my 20 port switch then into the home lan (which includes internet access).

753166 2009-03-04 01:43:00 Try setting an IP address outside the range the DHCP function of the router assigns (eg if it assigns 192.168.1.2 up to .1.99, set the IP of the Mac to .1.199 or something). jwil1 (65)
753167 2009-03-04 02:08:00 You could block him with your router or put 0.0.0.0 into his DNS settings. Rob99 (151)
753168 2009-03-04 02:39:00 Stuff up the DNS settings or put in a bogus proxy. Or do both.

Either of those would stump your average Mac user.

753172 2009-03-04 06:04:00 One simple way would be to delete the web browser, or move it to somewhere he won't find plod (107)
753173 2009-03-04 09:21:00 You shouldn't need to do anything to the Mac if your router has firewall and IP filtering capability which most of them do. You should be able to set up an outbound filter that will do the trick. AvonBill (11358)

No - not what I was getting at at all.

Notice I said the avergae Mac user - like the average PC user. Most have no clue. :nerd:

I would say the majority of people who buy a Mac (in NZ anyhow, and from my experience) would normally buy it because its a lot more basic software wise. Less that can be stuffed up.

And if thats the reason someone buys a Mac, they aren't going to have a clue about proxies or DNS settings.
